Southerners just need to own up and realize that most of southerners didn't own slaves but were fighting a rich man's war to a large degree - Sam Watkins addressed this in his book when the Confederate government allowed those who owned 20 slaves to be exempt from the draft. Many of his fellow soldiers cried "rich man's war - poor man's fight!" Instead of justifying the war or ignoring the slavery aspect of it, just admit it and move on and be glad the South lost.

  3. I'm from TN - didn't know Robert E Lee had a birthday in Jan or that people celebrated it. As for Lee. he would have disapproved of anyone celebrating his birthday. After the war, he had little to do with military trappings and at renunions marched out of step. He was not for slavery but he couldn't fight against his own state of Virginia. I think he makes a good tragic hero of sorts like Rommel but people should be glad that in the end he lost.
