  2. I believe one of the main roots of anti-government conservative mentality comes from racism. Prior to 1960s many southern conservatives had no problem with government support hence the reason they voted democrat. The south benefited greatly from government aid but once the democrats started supporting Civil Rights many of them left the party and joined the Republicans. Since the Republicans already wanted less government regulation on business it didn't take much to get their new poorer southern constituents to feel the same since it was the government which push anti-discrimination laws. If we had a libertarian government in the 20th century minorities would be riding at the back of the bus to this day.

  3. in the antebellum south you had slave owners actually marrying their slaves and claiming their children as their own as well as blacks owning slaves having been given their freedom and willed some slaves by their former masters. Those incidences were acceptable because the overall status quo remained the same but once the slaves were freed and given citizenship along with voting rights it changed. What's interesting (and disturbing) is that this old mentality persists in many conservatives that as long as some blacks are successful everything is ok as long as the rest remain in abject poverty and inequality
