If you look at historical maps, Ukraine didnt even exist 100 years ago, it was part of Russia, so yeah it's nothing to do with the West, it's a historical dispute and he is protecting many people in Ukraine that want to be Russian again. He asked for them not to be allowed to join NATO and we refused so NATO directly caused this in its arrogance and expansion.
