Not really true. Maschinenpistolen had been forbidden for Reichswehr, only allowed for Police. Schutzpolizei units ( baracked Police?) had only the allowness of five submachine guns per Hundertschaft ( Hundertschaft means about , hunderd men', a purely civilian word). May be other branches of german Police also had few submachineguns. Not only military weapons had been regulated in Versailles treaty, also weaponry of Police. This means, for policemen, not belonging to Schutzpolizei units, ( Ordnungspolizei and Kriminalpolizei/ detectives, only pistols in .32 Acp or even .25 Acp had been allowed, also police sabers had been regulated. With some troubles, german Gouvernement could get the allowness that uniformed policemen on foot could carry a long saber,If they had the allowness to carry a long saber in Imperial Army or Police. Also for pistol producers Versailles treaty caused, that they could only produce pistols with caliber smaller than 8mm ( about .32), and no Barrels longer than 102 mm/ 4". Producing pistols may be in .380 Acp was possible, but mostly only for foreign Market.

@jrooney58 : I am german, and i have never done such deep research, But for about fourty years i read german language arms magazines Deutsches Waffenjournal, Schweizer Waffen Magazin and Visier, also for about fifteen years two german magazines of military history. In those magazines a number of times was noted, that only police was allowed to have a number of submachineguns. I don' t think, the magazines wrote this for no reason ( or in other words as a lie). Yes there had been only one company allowed to produce rifles for the Army and one company to produce Luger pistol for Army, if a replacement was necessary. According to german arms magazines, there was also a restriction for pistol producers that only barrels shorter than 4"/102 mm and max. caliber of 8 mm ( a tiny bit larger than .32, i am not familiar to for me unlogicsl US measurement system) was allowed, so that pistol producers could only produce pocket pistols, mostly.22, .25, .32. In late 20s some few .380 ACP seem to have appeared.
But i am no expert and can be wrong, i have not eaten wisedom with a spoon.

@superturkeylegs In Naziera , Westgermany, and since 1990 whole Germany, yes.. But in 1920s not. The Schutzpolizei was basicly this , what in Westgermany and now is called Bereitschaftspolizei. The Bereitschaftspolizei is called, when there are Riots, to seach for missing persons, to search an area next to a crime scene for Investigation ( things the criminal lost etc.) or otherways a large number of policemen is necessary. In Imperial Age such Units didn' t exist. The in Hundertschaften ( equivalent to military companies) organized Schutzpolizei men had a 9mm Luger pistol ( ordinary uniformed street cop a .32 ACP pistol, detectives sometimes only .25 ACP) and a short saber as everyday weaponry, in case of need also 8x57 Gewehr 98, submachineguns, and even handgrenades and a total of 150 Polizeisonderwagen ( armoured cars) with two machine guns.
I am german and read this years ago in an article in Deutsches Waffenjournal, a german arms magazine.

@jrooney58 : I am Brittas boyfriend, only using her Computer. Born 1965, socalled middle education and german style trained metal
worker. When i was a child i watched in TV Wild West and swashbuckler (?) / In german Mantel und Degen movies. In my Homeregion there are lots of Castle ruins, so i was very intressted and wanted to know more. So i am no accademic and no expert of a Special era, country, weapon type, but after decades of reading books and magazines, visiting castles, all kind of museums and historic sites ( in my Homeregion from Celtic age onwards), speaking with Museum staff, collectors, hunters, target shooters, reenactors, policemen, security guards etc., i have a serious Basis of knowledge about arms, armour, fortifications from ancient days to now. It is totally Impossible to know everything, but: When you compare new heared facts with knowledge you have, to some degree you can notice, when something is to doubtable.
