The word as Stutzenkarabiner . The german verb ,stutzen' means to cut away a piece to shorten it. A Stutzen is today a hunting rifle with a stock of full barrel length, once a Stutzen was a shortened hunting gun, where the barrel was cut away at frontend of stock. A Stutzer is either the swissgerman word for a target/ competition rifle, or a dated word meaning Dandy. A Stütze , my english is limited, is either an Item, which prevents a heavy object from falling down, or ,Slang' for social money in case of unemployment.
The fact, that german troops between 1919 and 1933 ( the Reichswehr) used .22 training not only for money saving or noise reducing. For reason of Versailles treaty, the ammunition stock was so small, that under wwl conditions it would have been to few for a single day. So german forces simply had to few ammunition for propper training, so they had to use unregulated .22 ammunition, airguns and even ,Nadelstichgerät' ( needle stab device).
