Correct. 3 SS introduced the world to cammo uniforms. Eike stole Romanian 149mm field guns from the Skoda Works, so it had serious fire power. The guns had been prepaid and were loaded for shipment when they were stolen.

It wasn't actually rebuilt to its TO&E. It had lost virtually all of its field officers in Normandy. Then it was sent against the American 2nd Infantry -- itself expected to attack December 16. So it was loaded with ammo and had 8" guns in support. These were the guns that triggered the Malmedy massacre. They had gutted Piper's boys.

Hart had consistently negative things to say about the Allied High Command -- all of them. They'd SHUT HIM OUT. No-one would consult him. He remained insulted to the end of his days. He is hopelessly biased.

Dietrich couldn't read a map. Yeap.

No. The British and Canadians utterly destroyed 1,12 SS in Normandy. Even with top priority, the Nazis could not truly rebuild them. 3, 5 SS never left Russia. The 2 SS was very badly chewed up by the Americans in Normandy... same with the 17 SS. Hitler had sent his very best to France to stop the Allied invasion. He hoped to win and then send two panzer armies east into Russia. It didn't work out for him. He lost Big Time east and west.

The 28th Division was the original NG division -- dating from vets of the Civil War. It was mimicked. Bradley left the 82nd to fix the 28th early on. It's this connection that got the 28th the honor of marching through Paris. The other formations: Frances's 2nd and America's 4th Div 22 Regiment. The latter was Marshall's old outfit. Heh. Bradley had to bring in new officer blood at virtually all levels. The original crew was too old, slow, overweight -- the works. This proved true for ALL of the NG outfits.

It was an officer-cadet training fortress. It had only a trivial number of NKVD boys.
