So how does Israel's obligations of self-interest qualify it to be America's greatest ally compared fellow NATO countries who send troops that could easily be used in other hotspots around the world? If Israel managed to upset a serious proportion of the world's population how effective an ally does it make, for the U.S or anyone else?

Strongest ally? So they sent the second largest contingent of troops to Iraq and Afghanistan? Because surely that's what a stongest ally would do??

Though given the UK's response in military aid in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I would have thought the record spoke for itself? If another serious conflict were to break out it would be in the U.S' best interests to ensure countries like the UK were on board though, I think. The overall level of participation would depend upon how it's sold to both foreign and domestic public opinion.

If you're talking of strongest middle eastern ally then we're on the same page. If you're talking strongest International ally, that's a different matter.

An effective ally, I would agree. But strongest? The only argument I can see for terming Israel the U.S' strongest ally is its geographical position. Appears to be a mutual dependency issue to me. Given that neither party would really be in a position to offer direct military aid in the form of troops to the other, is this really the criteria for strongest ally?

The popular press in the UK appears happy to give radical and outspoken muslims a hard time and there's an upsurge in general patriotic support for the armed forces. In the case of the latter, I think it's also a subtle middle finger to any radicals and their sympathisers, to the point of it almost being a challenge.
