  1. ŠłR • Not at all. The authors/artists of the manga get payed solely based on the amount of manga they sell. Which is sold mostly in convenience stores in Japan, and that is how new talent is noticed when publications put them in weekly magazines during contest and debuts. Therefore, the creators have nothing to do with the animation studios, they’re separate entities. The anime studios are the real enemies since they treat their employees like garbage, paying them peanuts for quality effort.

  6. Vtmb2 coming 2020 A great example of how bad the animation was during that time, is equivalent to Hanna-Barbera in the US. When it came to cartoons, Disney and Fleischer Studios were 50 years ahead of their time. So, the most impressive animation was done in the beginning of the medium. Japan didn’t catch up until the 80s, that’s when they truly beat out all the competition when it came to 2D animation.

  10. turf team I love new anime...but there’s something about the 80s and 90s that give it way more charm than most of the shows you listed. For example, you listed One Piece, and I prefer the older animation than the updated version we have now.

I’m also an enthusiast when it comes to gaming, music, comics, literature, philosophy, history, etc. naming hobbies and using big numbers doesn’t change the fact that NGE is fine but not the best. For some reason you’re ignoring Nadia because you’ve never seen it, so you can’t even use it as reference, lol. My dude, go watch any Sci-fi OVA or movie from the 80s and tell me it’s not more creative than NGE? Studio Ghibli? You’ve already named them, so then there seems to be a bias when it comes to all the other options available? It all come down to you favoring NGE over the whole spectrum of other works. That’s fine that you wrote essays explaining your interpretation of the show. I really don’t think it’s that complex, I mean it’s pretty much a Shounen, lol. It’s like you doing the same for Akira, when most of it is of teens having temper tantrums and screaming names at random. You just said “most anime sucks” and “you don’t watch much anime”. Clearly you know more than me about the medium, lol. I like getting straight to the point, and you like going on tangents. I’m not hating on you, I’m trying to give you more options.

  15. Allison Martino I really love nostalgic anime, and as you mentioned I was also into 90s Hunter x Hunter (the 2011 one is a reboot, and I loved that one too) and grew up watching Naruto. Here’s a few classic Shounen I enjoyed that you might like: Rurouni Kenshin, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho (same creator of HxH), JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Inuyasha, Gun Sword, Trigun Fist of the North Star is another classic, from the 80s, where you have a ton of “manly men” shows. The fist part of JoJo is pretty much FOTNS. I’d highly recommend the OVA, Hokuto no Ken: Raoh Gaiden One Piece is really good too, but it’s really long and I’m not sure if you have the patience to sit through it XD Although reading the manga is faster. Of course there’s Shinichirō Watanabe works: Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope, Space Dandy

Oh wow, lol, reminds me of Chris Broad XD Yea, I can see why it would be more fun and interesting to buy a ton of stuff from Japan :) I have a Law figurine from One Piece, and someone gave it to me, lol. Also, I dislike having too much physical objects, so that’s why I was never into owning a comic, so instead I read everything online XD Ah, I guess one of mine would be the Meiji period.

Noah Rutledge I think you’re referencing mainstream Shounen, or specifically adaptations of light novels/visual novels when it comes to the “flashy colors” that all look exactly the same in the art style. Well, I would identify myself as a historian when it comes to animation (among other mediums), so I guess I would be in the same category as “hardcore”, lol.

  26. I would identify myself as someone who is beyond a fan, which is a historian. But that means I truly appreciate the craftsmanship when it comes to behind the scenes and technical aspects that normally people don’t question. But I would say an anime fan would be someone who casually watches anime. Then there’s the other extreme of trying to be someone you’re not, or being annoying for the sake of it.

  33. Vtmb2 coming 2020 Not true at all, lol. The 60s and 70s for anime were mostly all bad. Anime didn’t reach its peak until the 80s. Tezuka himself wasn’t even a good animator, his production company was mediocre for the majority of its time.

  34. Jonathan Henderson I think “old” would be considered, as I said, the 60s and 70s. Evangelion is very overrated. Hideaki’s first work, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water is animated very well and is never brought up, even though Miyazaki was somehow involved in it. Anyway, the actual plot of Evangelion is forgettable, imo. The characters were just as annoying and bland, similar to Nadia. I don’t understand the hype around it, other than the cool action scenes and lights glaring during tense situations. Oh, and both openings are just as memorable. But objectively speaking, that’s a biased and ignorant statement to say that it’s “one of the pinnacles” of any medium. You can do better than that.

Obviously there’s differences with technology that make them “old”. The majority of people are obviously uneducated about the history of these mediums, even though there’s artists who were ahead of their time during each decade, as I mentioned before with Disney and Fleischer Studios being ahead of their time. Well, I think you’re a big fan and haven’t watched many other things, or maybe haven’t researched other mediums. The way you’re taking is very arrogant and pretentious. Although I appreciate your passion for the show, I can’t take you seriously as a hardcore researcher myself. I’m giving my opinion on the show, that’s why I said it’s overrated when there’s other anime that are overlooked, which is why I said Nadia is one of them. Let’s be real, how old are you? I’m 26. You sound like an old man who’s seen everything, when you’re boldly stating Evangelion hails as this superior anime when there’s dozens of other shows that are equal, if not way better. Oh, be cliche and bring up how everyone loves these individuals because they make “masterpieces”. Yea, well, I’m not a fan of any of the authors/artists you named. All you proved is how little you know about anime, and every other medium you insulted by trying so hard, lol.

Please, try to stay on topic XD An opinion that’s logical when there’s too many anime to compete with, yes. Then you’d notice the similarities with Nadia and NGE. I’ve already listed them. I’m not a fan of the director, as I dislike NGE and his live-action work. Simply Google it. Here’s a brief list of OVAs: Angel’s Egg, Megazone 23, Devilman, Baoh, Robot Carnival, Vampire Hunter D, Battle Royale High School, Legend of the Overfiend, Patlabor. And that’s only a few! Movies: Lupin, Wicked City, Barefoot Gen, Akira, Little Nemo Again, only a few! You mean avant-garde? That “artistic” content can be seen in many of the things I’ve listed...not a big deal. You’re describing an anti-hero, which is common in storytelling. Akira, the movie, is vague compared to the manga. There’s really nothing going on except fighting and Japanese subculture themes. Same with NGE, its very Japanese based that’s references their society. I never said that either, I simply quoted you. Sure, I bet you know some things. I obviously don’t care about the term “masterpiece”, so I’m going to leave you with the list I gave you, so maybe you could check it out :)

  37. Ainz Ooal Gown You’d be surprised :) Look at this list I just posted and gave to Johnathan. They’re all from the 80s and I didn’t even get to the 90s, lol. Animation is actually getting worse in Japan because they’re focusing too much on 3D when their best is at 2D. They used 3D perfectly for transitional scenes or backgrounds to give it more depth, now it’s all 3D, and it only makes it worse.

I doubt you did because I can say with confidence that the list I gave is superior than the contemporary animation that you listed. Yes, I do believe the older animation of One Piece is better because it has more charm to it. Not only that, but there's not as much fan service as there is right now. In fact, the first episode of Wano country doesn't even count as they were promoting the new arc, even though it was beautiful. Most of the anime with 3D looks dull and ugly, literally no emotion being conveyed. The only thing that changed my mind is the new Lupin movie that was in 3D, made by a Japanese studio. Madhouse is responsible for some of the things on my list! Barefoot Gen and Wicked City are done by Madhouse. Lensman and Neo Tokyo are more examples! Obviously you know nothing about the technological aspects of animation, since you contradicted yourself by saying Madhouse is better than their own movies XD

  47. Aari Not bad of a list :) I’m mostly into Seinen/mature works nowadays (even underground works). When I was younger I would’ve had a very similar list to yours but my tastes evolved when I got older. Devilman in particular is really awesome, especially the OVA series (not a fan of Crybaby, but I do see the appeal with the art). I had a phase of just reading Devilman works a couple years ago XD Of course Death Note is a classic! Yea, I actually hate light novel adaptations...at least the majority of them. SAO is a LN adaptation, which might be why you don’t like it. Kino’s Journey is one of my favorite shows, and ironically it’s a LN adaptation, so it’s an exception XD Sure!   48. Aari Oh, and I totally agree with Naruto and Dragon Ball. Of course, I loved them when I was a kid but now I could never rewatch those shows. Actually, Dragon Ball is really fun to read (the pacing is perfect, it’s nothing like the anime btw), I read the manga a few months ago and I loved it, especially the tournament arc in the beginning, or the Buu arc (which is the last arc). With Naruto, you could check out all the fight scenes, they’re really animated well, the original series and the sequel! The Pain fight is legendary, lol.
