  8. You do realize that every professional medical and psychological association in North America and Europe follow a “WPATH standard of care” which includes medical gender transition. That is, anyone that goes to a licensed doctor or psychiatrist with persistent and consistent feelings of gender dysphoria will begin a medical treatment to transition the body to match the mind. Doctors in Thailand are also following the same standard. Feel free to not believe me and look it up for yourself. When it comes to medical and psychological issues, you’ll understand that I choose to follow standard practice, as Sauce has as evidenced in this interview.

The medical establishment has actually studied this issue at length and come to the conclusion that "accepting yourself and what nature gave you" has worse negative mental health outcomes than helping alleviate their gender dysphoria by helping them make a medical and social transition. Peer reviewed studies bear this out. Sauce, the trans woman in the video, is clearly doing fine with her life and is not impacting yours in the least.

  15. Transgender people in Thailand and elsewhere have a diversity of opinion on the topic. It surely doesn't help that in Thailand one can't legally change one's gender the way one can in much of the west. It surely doesn't help trans women identify as women when your own ID card betrays you.

I know very few Thai trans women in the US that don't change their legal ID in the US when they have the opportunity to do so.

Trouble with your pet theory is that taking steps to ameororate gender dysphoria with transition related medical steps has been clinically shown to reduce suicidal ideation and improve mental health outcomes for trans women compared to any other course of action. You know, regular doctor stuff. This is why every major medical and psychological association in the world supports gender transition for those that have gender dysphoria.

Hhwaja sira in Pakistan, etc. Europe and it's colonies didn't have this tradition so it's consequently less common although surely gender nonbinary people do exist, and these folks are asserting their identity as is their right to do so.

Hate speech directed at trans and gender non binary individuals should be treated the same as hate speech on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation. C-16, as you know, doesn't criminalize proper pronoun usage. Offensive, sure. But criminal? No. Not unless it was accompanied by some other really nasty speech that promoted hatred towards trans and gender non-binary folks. If that's the case, I'm more than happy to be your direct enemy on this issue.

If you do some web searches for in-vitro gametogenesis you’ll see that research is proceeding at an advanced rate so this actually could be possible in the future. In the mean time, there is surrogacy and of course adoption is always a good choice. There is no reason to be confused. If someone looks beautiful they are beautiful. It's voluntary and I'm sure any trans woman that wanted to be legally female would be happy exchanging a astonishingly small health risk in an emergency situation that would somehow be gender specific for hot having to dealt with transphobia literally every time she hands over her ID card to someone. If it was that much of specific situation a medical alert card could be placed in the wallet in front of the ID card so that way it's both available in emergency situation to first responders and the trans woman doesn't need to present this medical alert card to random people who just need to see ID to do an age check, etc.

No one is under any illusion that any genetics are being changed but the endocrinology changes of estrogen and androgen suppression are quite significant over time. Trans women are women to me. If they aren't to you, that's fine. We all have free will here. There is no scientific law that says I must karyotype test everyone I meet on the sidewalk and if I detect a Y chromosome or SRY gene I then I must use male pronouns to refer to them or Charles Darwin will rise from the grave and eat my brains.

Specifically, says the APA, that psychological distress and disability aren’t inherent to being trans, so being trans doesn’t meet the definition of a mental disorder. It’s a condition or simply dysphoria. All major medical addictions treat gender dysphoria follow the WPATH standard of care which can and often does include medical steps to transition. Your stigmatizing and factually incorrect language is categorically unhelpful. She is living the best life she can under the guidance of medical professionals.

  67. Unlikely she’s had vocal cord surgery. I’m sure she would have mentioned it. Recovery is tough. Just voice training / falsetto control and female affectation are very effective. To a small degree bieng on birth control during puberty and the androgen blockers and later hormones and finally SRS may have lowered her testosterone enough that vocal cord lengthening didn’t fully occur, preserving more of a female vocal range. Look up Belle Nuntita for an example of a Thai trans woman who can do amazing things with her vocal range.

I hear a lot of conflicting reports about what it’s like to be trans there. Some good about acceptance and the necessary laws being in place but also reports of terrible violence against LGBT people. Is the trans violence mostly connected to the sex worker and drug world? I know that’s mostly the case in the US. Are you married or have a boyfriend (or a girlfriend) in Brazil?

  100.  @carolineJakovinen  Sure. The general population understands transgender women quite well. It's been a cultural aspect of Thai culture for hundreds of years. Thai people are almost all Buddhists and have never been colonized so they don't have a Christian derived sin / sinner mindset. Thai people are particularly good at minding their own business, in general. Harassment or violence is going to be a very rare event in Thailand which may not be the case in the west (depending on where you are). That said, it is a legal black hole for LGBT rights in Thailand. No marriage equality. No ability to change your legal gender. No adoption. Very weak discrimination law. My wife and I live in California now but look forward to retiring in Thailand in about 10 years. We've been together for 20 years and legally married in California for 10. It's very much worth visiting Thailand if you get the chance. Happy to answer any other questions you have, just ask.

I think you’ll really enjoy your time up north. November through Feb would be by pick. Temperatures are good and you don’t want to go when they are burning the rice fields and the air quality is low (from smoke) from March to April. The hot season (March to May) is also really hot there (but not as bad if you’re up in the mountains. If you’re into eating crazy things Thailand certainly has you covered! Good luck in your adventure tired up there! Your biggest danger will be liking it so much you may not want to come back! Ha! My wife and I will retire to Chiang Mai in about 10 years. Can’t wait.

If wilderness survival is your thing, you should head to the north above Chiang Mai and make friends with some local not well off people that live very close to the land. It’s all survival all the time for them. There are also a lot of hilltribe native people like the Ankah or Karen that also live off the land quite expertly. Tons of independent tour guides would be happy to take you to some real native villages. You will be amazed at how far 10 euro worth of food and a 6 pack can take you sometime. You can be grilling giant water bugs and snakes under a bamboo lean to in a remote rice field drinking beers before you know it! Ha! Thai people have a lot good will and are generally quite interested at making friends with random foreigners. Especially if you’re buying which is pretty trivial compared to prices for anything in Brussels. The real problem Is the language barrier but a guide can really help with that. Good luck! Kathoey and sao praphet song (women of the second type) are common. 3rd gender isn't a ranked list like a podium finish where you're getting the bronze medal. It's just a common historical way to describe someone not exactly in the gender binary in SEAsia. India for example has a legally recognized option for 3rd gender trans people that is not male or female. Some western countries do this as well for people that don't fit into the gender binary. Clearly all our genders are perfectly valid and one isn't better than another.

Heck, there are a number of trans females that into those things too. I know quite a few of them, the reality is not all trans females are ultra girly. Bottom line is that the job of a parent is to support their kids. If that's not paramount and you plan on loving them only conditionally, then don't have kids. There are plenty of other worthy things to do with one's time and capital. You can also have more than one kid. It's a 50/50 dice roll to have a son or daughter whether they be cisgender or transgender. This is a topic I know and think a great deal about. I'm bisexual. I'm into hunting, fishing, working out, motorcycles and cars, and even girls too. Dad still disowned me. We never talked again after that day until he died of cancer 10 years later. My wife had SRS with Toby Meltzer in Phoenix. No cost, covered by insurance. If it were me, I'd do my level best to some health insurance coverage that includes this. It's the law in many US states and even plans under the ACA cover it.

Both of those things are not legally possible for her to do in Thailand. Everyone has the right to identify as the gender that they want. If Sauce wants to be considered "not a woman" that's great and perfectly her right. Gender non-binary people exist and that's great too. In the video, if you know the slightest amount of Thai you'll notice that Sauce uses the female ending particle "Ka", which is essentially self declaring her gender as female in the language. It's key to understand here that in South Asia and SE Asia there has been a 3rd gender social role for effeminate men / trans women for centuries that's part of the cultural landscape in a way that Europe and it's colonies never had. Hijra in India, Hhwaja sira in Pakistan, Waria in Indonesia. So too in Thailand. I don't know if Sauce actually sees herself as "not a woman", as a member of this 3rd gender class, or that's just the way she's been taught to respond to a question about her not being a cisgender female. There is a lot of nuance to language here. It surely doesn't help matters that Thai trans women can't legally be female on their ID card. That piece of plastic is more trans-formative and epistemic than one would at first understand. It allows one to hold the line and point and say, look here, I am legally a woman that cannot currently be done with a M on your ID. In many ways Thailand hasn't grappled with this yet, and the reality of legal LGBT relationships, and it's non-confrontational style of change management is not particularly speedy. In the west, this transformation didn't happen overnight, either, of course. A developing technology known as IVG, short for in-vitro gametogenesis, could make it possible for same-sex couples to conceive a baby out of their own genetic material and no one else’s. They’d do this by having cells in their own bodies turned into sperm or egg cells. Cisgender women have had uterus transplants to conceive a child and there is no technical reason a trans woman on hormones couldn’t do the same. This sort of technology is probably 20 years away.

First the street food in Thailand is famous the world over. It’s excellent and very inexpensive. It’s worth flying to Thailand for the street food all on its own. Just stick to places that are busy and you’ll be fine (busy means fresh food). I can’t begin to summarize all the awesome things to eat. If it looks good and Thais are waiting for it, it’s going to be great. As far as dating apps go it’s hard to beat ThaiFriendly or Tinder but just be aware that working girls and scammers also abound. Keep your money and wits about you. There are a lot of tattoos in Thailand so that won’t be a problem. Just cover that up when you go to a temple, that’s about it. Some temples even have have pictures and statues with topless women so… not unprecedented. I can’t imagine carrying a knife is a problem in Thailand, especially in rural places. I can’t say I know the laws on knives. I’d imagine if you can take it in your checked luggage you’d be fine with it in Thailand. Lots of people smoke in Thailand all over the place, so that’s not a problem generally. I don’t smoke myself so I can’t say I know much about cigar availability, but I would guess like a lot of cultural imports they would be hard to find outside of specialty smoke shops. You don’t need to leave your own country. The reason there are fewer elsewhere is the systematic discrimination that trans people experience in those countries. Thailand has fewer social barriers to transitioning and has had fewer barriers for hundreds of years. Consequently you see more around in public instead of being miserable at home. First, they are not more likely to have been sexually abused than others. If you think about it for a minute, the vast majority of men that are abused do not become trans. The presence or absence of male role models makes no difference to one’s gender identity. The reasons underlying gender identity are complex but essentially early in brain development. Ask most trans people and they’ll tell you that they knew this from a very very early age. What other questions do you have?

Let's try to quantify that. Phrased another way, out of every 100 men you see, how many ladyboys do you see? Where would you put that figure? I'd put it around 2 for every 100 in Bangkok. 2%. Is that going to be vastly higher around Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy or Patpong? Yes. Say 4, 5 or 6 out of 100. 4%, 5% or 6%. Hell, it's going to be 100% inside a ladyboy bar but that's not representative of all the sleepier parts of Bangkok that you've probably never visited like Min Buri or Bang Bon. Away from Bangkok (and Pattaya) it's going to be quite a bit lower as there is always a lot of LGBT rural to urban migration.

The closet is an idea as old as time in the LGBT community. There is also the more rare middle path that they're rather gender fluid and don't mind all that much one way or another and that's a valid choice too. The rigidity of the word transvestitism was it's own downfall as gender is just more dynamic than the transvestite / transsexual dichotomy of earlier decades.

There are Hijra in India, Waria in Indonesia, Bakla in the Philippines, Kathoey in Thailand, and many others. This didn’t just spring up in Pattaya in the 60’s, but it did certainly did become a cultural hub for Thai LGBT people and gave them a type of independence and socioeconomic power they didn’t have access to previously. In some ways it mirrors the way San Francisco or Berlin in other times became LGBT capitals of influence and acceptance. The sexual differentiation of males and females is because of estrogen exposure and testosterone suppression. Cos women already have regular estrogen and develop breasts naturally. Trans women getting that estrogen from the pill will then grow breast as if their body was naturally producing it. It’s not perfect because the dosage is not ideal and there is no corresponding suppression of T but the price is right and it’s widely available. My wife is a trans woman and she took this as a kid in Thailand. If you have an my more questions just ask.

Estrogen and testosterone suppression (injection or oral) don’t validate anything. They simply change one’s endocrinology to be within the normal range for a cisgender female. Again, hormones are part of standard medical treatment in consultation from any licensed physician for someone with gender dysphoria. The reasons for suicide vary. The two main groupings among trans people are: 1. Dysmorphia and dissatisfaction between mind and body resulting in depression. Fortunately it has been clinically shown that transition reduces suicidal ideation and improves mental health outcomes. 2. Transphobia, rejection, discrimination and osterization from family, friends, career and/or religion in society. Fortunately as well, more and more people are understanding of the struggles trans people have these is less structural hostility, and living as trans person is now becoming better and easier. Consequently the more supportive environment the trans person is in, the more suicide rates decline.

If you have any questions, just ask. Some of these things are cultural differences that do not directly translate. Thai woman also cannot change their legal gender as is routine in the west, so it can be a matter of perspective about what exactly one is referring to.

Trans women are hormonally female because of HRT and it’s the endocrine system that determines a lot of sex differentiation via gene expression. At the end of the day no one is doing karyotype tests on the sidewalk. People determine gender by casual visual inspection.

  467. Have you heard of hormone blockers? They control testosterone during puberty so a ladyboy’s voice never lowers. Uncommon in the past but standard practice now. Some girls also have excellent falsetto control that it’s impossible to tell. Sure, you can identify many ladyboys by voice but definitely not all.

If you get to know any Thai people, especially any LGBT people, they tend to know absolutely everyone in the area who would be trans and they'd be only too happy to help play matchmaker. Getting an introduction is always way better than dating apps. You're lucky that you're doing this now and not the bad old days before marriage equality. It was an incredible struggle to keep my wife in good immigration status since we couldn't get legally married.

  478. There is a diversity of opinion among trans women in Thailand. It’s not as if all trans people think alike. Ladyboy is mostly an easy compound noun made from lady and boy and that’s easy for non native English speakers to say and it doesn’t carry the same subtext or weight as it does In the west as Thai people have their own Thai words and subtext that they care about. There isn’t a cisgender equivalent word exactly that turns out to be very consersationally useful. Thai trans women also don’t have any legal female gender recognition, unlike dozens of other countries so it’s collectively difficult even for the set who would prefer to think of themselves as female to do so when their own ID betrays their own self concept. One really needs to spend a fair amount of time with Thai trans women to understand that things are very much conceptually different than in the west.
