Low cost to the USA, extremely high effectiveness at greatly diminishing a hostile, nuclear-armed rival. In addition, the way that the wider world has come together in the face of Russia’s aggression has been the best possible deterrent against Chinese aggression. Would the world have rallied together like this if Trump were still in office? Somehow, I doubt it. The moves with respect to semiconductors (the CHIPS Act and the recently imposed restrictions) and green energy manufacturing (the Inflation Reduction Act) will get relatively high marks for effectiveness in limiting China. Zeihan sees inflation as being due to factors outside of the US President’s control: Putin’s decision to invade, Xi’s self-sabotaging zero-covid lockdowns, and the demographics-fated retirement of the global Baby Boom generation. Zeihan will give Biden far more of a pass on inflation than the US electorate will. Getting an infrastructure bill passed was way overdue, but Zeihan undoubtedly sees it as coming up far short of what is going to be necessary.
