durin past 30 years french population has stayed same around 50-60million, so what changed in 1950s? I dont think french work as hard as some cultures explaining why there is no time for church. Urbanization happened of course, Im interested did urbanization shift reflect somehow in people religious views (not beliefs but daily life applications) ?

@Mamouthomed looking central european population densities and this description makes me think that level of population(40m, now some 50-60m) in france is likely close to optimal or life quality goes down. while booming, growing population has perks, stable, even stagnating one allows people to build other qualities like science, culture, politics in long term with some flexibility for bad times(having experienced well trained doctors for example help against plague, covid etc, but it needs 20years+ stable work and good universities). france has been strong in sciences , which is perhaps not first thing us anglosaxon culture sphere people think (but looking past 200 years history books shows it).

@jannguerrero do you happen to know if "population decline" has similar explanation? Coz to me that seems obvious, people adapt.
