  2. I've been on both sides of the fence and to be honest, landlords costs (insurance, taxes, maintenance) rise every year and it is a business. So in order to make money rents have to go up to keep pace. What happens is the landlords start cutting back on maintenance and the housing stock suffers. The problem is, as you pointed out, wages have not kept up because cheap greedy corporations don't value workers.
