It never ceases to amaze me how fast decades of hard work can be wiped out in an instant.

I never understood how people can afford outrageous housing prices. $970,000??? For a small apartment, which means that you don't even own it.

Just like a nasty divorce, the best revenge for Ukraine is to come out of this war stronger economically and militarily!

It seems like once a country develops its automobile manufacturing industry, economic development takes off.

Americans are easily bored waiting on media for the next best thing.

They'll come back. Many countries have been in the same position and bounced back the economic abyss.

France...be careful what you wish for. βThose who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.β Ben Franklin

@15:12 You have a strange way of interpreting that chart. First of all, the blue line (great deal) only returned to the early eighties level. Next, the red (quite a lot) evened out and the other two actually increased. Not what I would call a catastrophic collapse in confidence.

The whole world is standing with the Ukraine. But what good is standing around and doing nothing?
26
Question: "What is behind the violence waves in France?" Answer: "Introduction of immigrants into a monoculture."

Unlike the US where we wait for the problem to manifest itself and then just throw money at the problem until it goes away.π

That's because Vietnam was playing Go while everyone else was playing chess. Different strategies.

This is the question that I've been asking. I'm sure Russia will be willing to pay for everything that they wrecked.

Donetsk and Luhansk: "Yeah, we're throwing in our lot with Russia." The World: "Yeah, about that...you're now on your own."

Ironically, at one time all three major religions (Christians, Muslims and Jews) lived in the area of Jerusalem in peaceful harmony with no conflict. There were synagogues, temples, churches and mosques all occupying the same place.
16
That would be common sense and has never been taught in public schools. That is taught by parents and the last couple of generations of parents have been too lazy to bother teaching their children right from wrong and using common sense.
16
Sanctions don't have an immediate impact, they are designed to have a long term and increasingly powerful effect.

Here's to hoping that 2022 doesn't end up as the dumpster fires of 2021 and 2020. π₯π₯π₯π©

It'd be a real shame if those super yachts got sunk.

"So, who are our allies?" "600 million screaming Chinamen." "I thought there were a billion of them." "There were."
15
Actually, the tribes of Afghanistan did practice a form of democracy. Whenever there was a problem or issue, the separate tribes would meet to hammer out a solution.
15
It's amazing that, with all their mismanagement and chronic inflation, they continue to thrive as well as they have.
15
Growing up in the 1960's we were told that the earth could not sustain the whole population at that time much less more people in the future. And here we are sixty years in the future and we're still being told that the earth can't sustain the world population much less more population growth in the future!ππ

Our own government and corporations sold us out by allowing cheap products to be made overseas by slave labor. You can't beat no labor costs for products and we love our products.
13
This scenario seems to be the way of the world now. The thing that I can't decide on is if it's only because we're more aware in the digital age or if it was always been this way.

National Geographic map of The World At Night says it all.

Everyone suffers except the one who started this mess.

Kennedy was our last great Democratic president and Eisenhower was our last great Republican president.
11
Will the oil boom lift thousands out of poverty or will they be squandered and stolen? As a student of history, all I can say is history repeats itself.

If you set the Speed to 0.75, then Grant talks normally! π

Peace in the Middle East: If it happens, then it will only be temporary at most.
11
Kind of like Europe in previous centuries.
11
Just like the Japanese on islands in the Pacific theater of WWI, Hamas has built concrete bunkers, tunnels and caves. They popped up behind US Marines in the front lines and surprised them causing high casualties.
11
If you figure that it takes 2 or 3 times as long to do anything outside in the winter and it takes 20 minutes to get dressed to go outside, then you're off to a good start! π¨π¬ββ

Reminds me of medieval Europe where small ethnic groups tried to annihilate each other .

Privatization of State services usually leads to a select few close people of the politicians selling those things to make a huge profit buying assets for a fraction of their cost. Then it creates oligarchies and monopolies. πΈπ²π΅π°π€π

Funny that a Soviet republic broke away from Russia and then became prosperous and then when back in the Soviet Union (I mean Russian Federation), it was once more impoverished. πΈπΈπΈ

Yet another country that has the United States to thank for rebuilding after a major war.
10
Funnily enough, one of the attackers had to be carried in court with a wheelchair and was unresponsive. The rest were visibly beaten. Which begs two questions. One, how is it that they are still alive being in Russia? And two, I wonder what pampered treatment they would have had, had that happened in the US?

According to some YouTube videos, it only takes 100 to wipe out humanity. So, not a lot need to get through.

The problem with the US government handing out money in this day and age is there is no oversight or accountability of what or where the money is spent on. Here you go, here's billions of dollars of taxpayer money that we will never see again. We're sure it'll all work out fine.

Interestingly enough, the small city here I live had a balanced budget, meaning that they did not spend more than the revenue they took in, until 1933. Since then, 30% of the budget comes from real estate taxes and the rest from state and federal tax revenue subsidies. So, if the federal government stops working, then the state government stops working and if the state government stops working, then our local government stops working. Theoretically, we could all wake up one day and nothing will work.
