There has to be some computer nerd/geek out there that could use Linux to write a program for these tractors.

@11:05 No, they won't. It's the same with automobiles. Nowadays the engine , transmission and drive lines are basically bullet proof and will last a couple of hundred thousand miles if taken care of. But, it's the God Damn electronics that go bad and fail. There is very little that can be repaired and if you can't find a new part, you're screwed. Technology is great...when it works. It'll be the downfall of civilization.

It's called protecting your dealership and service network. Disgraceful the way John Deere treats its customers especially considering the price they pay for the equipment. Car companies tried this back when computerized systems first came on line. They made it all proprietary and you had to go back to a dealership to have your car diagnosed and fixed. Now anybody can access the computerized systems on vehicles.

Stop buying John Deere products!

The automobile industry tried this scam back when electronics became the standard on vehicles. You could not reset codes, read codes, or diagnose problems without a scanner and scanners were only available to dealerships. It's called protecting your dealer network. Now, you can buy a scanner, go to any repair shop, and even get codes read for free at auto parts places.

Back in the 1980's, IBM tried thjs with their personal computer. IBM PCs were made with proprietary hardware. So, if you wanted to upgrade the memory, you had to buy IBM memory and not only IBM memory but IBM memory made specifically for that particular model. Needless to say, IBM almost went out of business because of this philosophy and never made personal computers again. Competing manufacturers and the buying public bypassed IBMs system in favor of across the board hardware with industry standards.

It's all good. It'll get fixed when it falls down, crumbles or ceases to work.
