Cecilia as you correctly say Charles appreciated that the Harkles are useless at handling money and that is why he closed the Bank of Dad . I had a close friend who was an only child .Her parents gave her everything including a house as a wedding present. She found it difficult to be polite to her parents despite being treated so generously and she never stopped looking for cash gifts .

The Harkles are expert at bullying aged relatives .I think Charles was only in touch with his younger son when money was required. When Charles told H that the Bank of Dad was closed he turned instead to the Bank of granny . I suspect the money is just frittered away on extravagance and not on basic essentials.
