Rob M it would be interesting to know how the application to join NATO was handled.I would have been tempted to enter into discussions with Putin to establish how he was intending to meet the entry criteria and how his progress was to be monitored because the benefits of a free press, radio, television etc would have been amazing as would Constitutional reform .Perhaps the West missed an opportunity but clearly I do not know but can only speculate.

@Isochest I thought France was worried about the French farming lobby who would find it difficult to compete with the Ukraine.

@cyizamwana2135 I agree each nation ought to be free to choose its style of government .Unfortunately the choice in Russia was not made by the people and there has been financial corruption on a massive scale, no free press or media generally , elections have been rigged, the Constitution has been amended to keep Putin in Office and people who displease the President are murdered in a variety of ways. I could go on but am depressed just by typing this short piece.

@Isochest Competition from the Ukraine for the French sounds sensible to me .

@mauroalves317 I am afraid I am not 100 % certain the involvements you mention were NATO or the UN but if you wish it should be possible to look in depth at the first and second Iraq Wars ,Serbia etc . I repeat the World is dangerous but NATO is not an organisation that becomes involved in offensive campaigns for example Sadam Hussein and his Iraq forces invaded Kuwait and that forced the U S A and Allies to declare War.

@clemalford9768 Boris learned words have an effect and you need to learn the same lesson. Ukraine is not a member of NATO and there are no NATO troops in that country .Invading another country to kill, wound , rape and steal is not the way to make friends and influence people .

@hc1897 All is not well in China as has been revealed recently by the reaction to Covid ; the failure to take into account the basic needs of the population ( eating and drinking) and particularly the elderly is what I refer too.

@martinevans1427 What is the problem with treating every application fairly ?

Stephen you are correct .Putin presided over economic criminality by creating wealthy Oligarchs who owed loyalty to him. He ignored the ordinary Russian family whose standard of living did not improve and has constantly blamed the West. He is deeply cynical pretending to the Russian people that he is a hard working patriot when in reality he is just a greedy criminal who enjoys a life of luxury and graft.

@pedrorequio5515 You make an important point the French farmers have far too much power in the EU and all policies have to be designed to suit them.I am not and never have been in sympathy with the so called Brexiteers but I do worry that the French and Germans are far too influential and have their own agendas.

@pedrorequio5515 I appreciate you going to the trouble of educating me because the information is really useful in evaluating Putin's motives. Thank you.

@alexandrewilson5388 I am certain you are right but the Russian government clearly do not encourage freedom.

@mauroalves317 Ukraine is not a member of NATO therefore the organisation decided it was not appropriate to send troops . A special arrangement was made to enable members to help individually with supplies of equipment .You will note that each country decided what they could contribute. Increasing defence expenditure is not designed to increase tension but to suggest to any enemy that precautions are being taken. The U S A is very strange in its attitude to Communism and that may be why sanctions are still in place in respect of Cuba .I was unaware there were still economic sanctions operating but not surprised ; I see nothing wrong with left wing views.

@creativeandaliveat65 This is something Putin has not considered because he fails to appreciate how the satellite countries such as Finland ,Ukraine and Poland hate the very thought of being ruled from Moscow again. History is not bunk but is a valuable resource in understanding human beings reactions to unexpected events. If it were not for the RAF and the brave pilots the UK might have had to cope with a German invasion in 1940 .This is why the UK is anxious to help Ukraine in 2022 and why the Germans and French are relatively diffident to the conflict .I appreciate the French were invaded but they actually cooperated with the Germans apart from a few brave souls .The Germans in turn were invaded by the allies including Russia but that was the price they paid for their crimes against humanity.

@mauroalves317 this is a very dangerous World and just because the Soviet Union collapsed did not reduce the risk to the safety of Europe, Canada and the U S A .Russia has been using NATO as a bogeyman for years and must have relied on ignorance or brain washing because the organisation is defensive rather than aggressive like Putin's Russia. As the years passed and Russia 's applications to join NATO were rejected it became increasingly clear that Russia was armed to the teeth and aggressive which drew more people to join.I don't think NATO actually canvassed for members but countries wanted to join from fear and it is difficult to turn people down when they are afraid.

@Consrignrant Well I gather you are not prepared to explain your view .Thank you for a brief response to an issue which many people raise.

@theconnoisseur2346 Music is very soothing and can create a calm environment .

@mikldude9376 One wonders why the Russian people allowed him to stay in office for so long .It may be that the way Putin oppressed the opposition and indeed murdered some of the dissidents cowed his other opponents .

@officialreplik5095 We have to enforce the rule of law on every criminal and take the consequences because otherwise the rule of law is completely meaningless .

@Glory_2_Russia You liberate no one but kill, maim and rape .When are you going to appreciate that you are criminals motivated by a greedy Tyrant to commit unspeakable acts .
1
@Glory_2_Russia Seven U S volunteers were murdered by Russian criminals.

He had no experience of being a leader and probably lacked confidence in his ability to govern the country .His inexperience plus lack of confidence probably led to his hard line approach to so called dissidents.

@martinevans1427 A trifle cynical but I do have some sympathy for your view. The historical view is that the West watched what happened in Europe in 1945 when the Russians had a head of steam and looked as if they would conquer Germany, France , etc There was genuine fear of a Russian empire and to make matters worse the Americans have a real allergy to Communism and no doubt you are aware of the problems McCarthy created and why the Vietnam War started.

Gravestone you don't like someone because of their height and I bet you have never met him. His cold eyes are the window to his soul which is dark and demonic. His actions are disgusting and he needs to be called out.
