it's nice to see a report about energy storage for once. It is the key to making wind and solar a reliable source of energy. We could build millions of windturbines, but it won't matter if we can't store the energy for the days where the wind doesn't blow.

not for long. Give another year or two, and russian gas will be fully replaced. Russia's market share in Europe has already dropped from almost 50% to somewhere around 10%.

the Nordic countries have long days during the summer. The sun is up from 04.00 to 22.00 here in Denmark at this time. So it would be great if we could store some of that energy for the long dark winters...

you could have both. A nuclear power plant has to run 24/7, it would be more efficient if some of that energy produced during the night could be stored for hours of peak demand.

@martythemartian99 i am not really arguing in favor of nuclear, wind and solar seems to do the trick here in Denmark. I am just saying that we don't have to choose just 1 energy solution in the future.

@martythemartian99 that is pretty cool, 5 years is not a long time to break even. My neighbor has a similar setup, but it can only cover about 80% of his needs. The days are too short during the winter here in the north, and the electricity is also used for a heatpump and an electric car.. Still a good investment though.

@martythemartian99 that is a good point 👍

Lithium is too expensive for grid-scale storage. It is probably better suited for electronic devices and electric cars.

@ocker2000 i don't think it is going to be just one type of storage in the future. Lithium batteries could be used for short term storage, with enough capacity for 1 or 2 days. That would make it much easier to manage the grid. Thermal batteries, pumped hydro and maybe even hydrogen could be used for long term storage. Lithium batteries will most likely be replaced by sodium-ion batteries in the near future, at least for stationary storage. I don't think we are gonna see sodium-ion batteries in mobile phones anytime soon.

@spacemelon3988 that is a good point.

that is good news 👍

Oil, gas and nuclear are some of the most expensive sources of energy.

he didn't say anything about it being the first, he said the largest. They even showed another smaller battery in this video, that the same company made a few years ago.

nuclear and energy storage would complement each other quite well, in my opinion.
