opposing russian aggression is absolutely necessary for Europe.

compete against who? China and India rely on LNG too.

solar power in the EU is expected to grow by 40GW this year, which is a new record. So there is some good news on that front. And i can give you some more good news from Denmark at least. Biogas production increased by almost 25% so far, which means that 32% of our annual gas consumption is now biogas. The new target is 70% by 2025.

@ddshiranui the point was to show that the gas shortage can be reduced by generating electricity from other sources. As an example, around 40GW in new solar panels will be installed across the EU this year. That can replace around 4,6 bcm of natural gas, or roughly 3% of the gas from russia. It is also important to remember that the energy market in the EU is inter-connected. If an energy company in Denmark has gas or electricity to spare, then they will try to sell it in other countries like Germany.

@wally7856 russia accounted for 38% of EU's gas consumption in 2021. Around 35% of the total gas consumption was used for power generation. So it would more or less fix the gas shortage, if EU could stop using gas for power generation. Methane can also be produced from organic waste, called biogas. Here in Denmark, we produce enough biogas to cover 32% of our annual gas consumption. I see no reason why Germany couldn't do the same. It is also possible to produce methane through a process called electrolysis. It requires a lot of electricity though, but wind turbines could help with that.

@billjane5522 Have you ever fought back against an invading army, Bill? not your country, but you personally?
2
@cuc6410 i think you might be a bit confused, it is russia who has invaded Ukraine, not a NATO country.
2
@ThomasTomiczek the pipeline "power of siberia" started construction in 2014, and it is expected to be completed in 2025. And that relatively short pipeline from a gas field in eastern russia to eastern china. If russia wants to supply asia from the gasfields in western russia, they better hurry up if they want a pipeline to be completed before 2052...
2
@wxyang3535 then how do you explain Japan? They export the same kind of products, and they have to import 90% of their energy. Pretty much all natural gas in Japan comes from LNG.
2
Algeria is already a major supplier to Europe. Around 12% of EU's gas imports in 2021.

@jessicadorion8507 it has been clear for decades that russia would use Germany's gas dependence against them sooner or later. Which is why Germany should have done more to lessen the dependence a long time ago. But at least it is over now.
1
@jessicadorion8507 russia has reduced the gasflow to put pressure on Europe. Which is exactly what all the nordstream 2 critics said would happen.

appeasing the dictator never works. Putin will just come back for more territory a few years later. Ukraine can defeat russia the same way the US was defeated in Vietneam. By keeping the war going until the price becomes too high for the russian people.

@arcticfox3347 operational, but not complete. It can't deliver gas to Beijing yet.
1
@wxyang3535 There is only one incomplete pipeline between russia and china, and no pipelines to India. So discount or not, most of the gas would have to be transported as LNG. Russia's current capacity for LNG is around 40 bcm per year. China's gas imports alone are around 140bcm per year. The 4 largest importers of LNG are Japan, China, India and South Korea. All countries with a lot of manufacturing.

don't worry, more will be coming soon :)

as long as they don't invade countries in Europe, we don't care.
