In USA, these men & women were called 'the greatest generation' and sadness for those that died. I was with the USAF and in Malta in 1957. The small bars were fun. Of course I arrived in Istanbul without any money. A sympathetic Turkey called the Kahan Building for me...I told them I was headed for APO 324, should I leave the plane here...yes he said and we have a vehicle picking up another person so you can ride along. I went to the transient barracks and again without money. So the sympathic Staff Sergeant put in the one dollar. Next time I was in town, I paid that dollar back. After than, I was riding in an air force ambulance. We broke down, and me being a former farm kid, if we had a bit of wire handy, I could have used that and we could have gotten along on the other axle but, no wire. Then I am given coins to call the base. Less than 24 hours in Turkey, I am given coins to call the base but with good luck, the Catholic Chaplin drives up & I am saved. We drive and get to a US Navy base & have lunch. We get to the base and I see the ambulance towed in later that night. That was my introduction to Turkey. I did repay that one dollar.
