  1. Did they? They eliminated half of the humans. That's exactly what you'd expect if they were chosing totally randomly if I'm not mistaken. This is what passing the Turig Test looks like.

  2. I think modern AIs are basically just search engines that have learned to disguise other people's opinions as their own. The internet is something no sci-fi author I'm aware of considered in shaping AI development. They are basically just search engines with lipstick.
