This video is Broken Window Economics. Saying you shouldn't donate clothes because you'll destroy local textile industries is like saying we should have never invented pesticides, anti-biotics etc. because those advancements allow a small number of farmers to feed everyone thus put most farmers out of work.

@Ballissle How does that not make people dependent on you? They are just dependent on your labor instead of your money.
6
That's what people want to think so they can feel better about not donating, but there's nothing to back that up. Then in the ultimate act of projection they say people who donate to charity "just want to feel good about themselves."
6
Do you have a single fact to back that up? Charities are tax deductible so the government has a vested interest in cracking down on fraud.

If you don't have to spend two hours a day walking to get water, that empowers you because those are two more hours you can spend on something else.

The difference between bears and people is people will use the money they no longer have to spend on clothes, food, etc. on something else. If someone no longer has to spend two hours a day walking to get water, they can spend an extra two hours a day at work. Marxism fails because it creates a perverse incentive where people don't want to work out of fear of losing their benefits. Charity does not work like that, unless you are looking into the specific economic status of every individual you donate to.

This is broken window economics. Saying "we should stop importing clothes so the textile worker can have a job" is like saying "we should start breaking people's windows so the glazier can have a job." In 1800 80% of Americans were farmers. Now its about 1.5% because advances in technology have allowed a small number of farmers to feed huge numbers of people. Does that mean 78.5% of Americans are unemployed because technology destroyed their jobs? When people save money on clothing, they end up spending the money they saved somewhere else, which creates a new demand. People do insane mental gymnastics to make themselves feel good about not donating to charity, then project their own mindset onto donators saying "They just want to feel good about themselves without actually helping people."

This video is based on the Broken Window Economics Fallacy. Saying you shouldn't donate clothes because it will put the textile worker out of a job is like saying people should keep committing crimes so the police can still put bread on table. Yes you may put some textile workers out of work, but think about how many farmers have been put out of work in the last 200 years because pesticides, anti-biotics, etc. have made it so easy for a small number of farmers to feed everyone.

It's very important to realize our memories are imperfect. If two people get into a fight, they might "lie" about how it started without even realizing it, and both will think the other is a dirty liar. I remember reading an article written by a political pundit I hated, then going back to it a decade later and seeing I totally mismembered what he said, and he was almost arguing the opposite of what I thought he was.

40% severely handicapped? Holy shit. That's way higher than I expected.

A creature that truly never died but still reproduced would overrun the planet.

This is why lots of people block out being abused as a child. They never talk about it, and it doesn't fit their preconceptions with the world if it was someone they trusted. Many memories are actually records of records of records.

The "Berenstein Bears" thing makes sense because "stein" is a common suffix in German surnames. Or maybe it's "stien" but that's still closer.

No, humanity is just continually looking for a higher standard of living. For example, Nigeria's life expectancy in 1990 was 46 years old. Now it is 57. There will always been impoverished nations because poverty and wealth are relative terms.

Because we can't stand stupid people.
