Horrible crime? Don't be so melodramatic. I'm sick of people acting like you go from a toddler to Confucius on your 18th birthday. No society in the world considered a 16 year old a child prior to about 100 years ago.

They're teachers, teachers naturally feel bonds with their students.

It really makes my blood boil how everyone treats "18" with some quasi-religious reverence. It seems so intellectually dishonest. Is there 1 person in 100 who really thinks 18 isn't a completely arbitrary number? For 99% of human history, the cut off for adulthood, if it had a specific age, was somewhere between 12 and 16. And that's NOT arbitrary because this is when people, on average, go through milestones like becoming fertile or reaching their adult size and shape. If we're going to treat a certain age with religious reverence, shouldn't ti at least be something more natural?

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, during my time on the teh internetz it seems women are much more likely to feel "taken advantage of" during these types of relationships (the aforementioned boys definitely exist, though). So in that way it does seem a bit worse when a male teacher does it. On the other hand, I wonder how much of that is a self-fulfilling prophecy given we live in a society that teaches male sexuality is predatory and female sexuality is benign (think about how a movie like Forest Gump would go over with the public if Jenny was a man and Forest was a mentally handicapped woman).

Actually I read a study on this and the punishment gap for this crime is no bigger than any other crime. You'd be surprised how short some of the sentences from the people who get busted on "To Catch a Predator" are, and those guys are targeting much younger individuals.

They're teachers. Teachers form bonds with their students. I remember I tutored a 12 year old girl on coding for about a year when we had to break it off I felt like I lost a daughter.

@TheUnitedNationsYouTubed-yy7kv Why does it "harm people" though? 18 is not a natural or biology based cut off for adulthood. Every society in the world considered you an adult by 16 if not earlier up until about 100 years ago, and half of America loses their virginity before 18. I don't think this should be legal but I also don't think its any worse than buying a 16 year old a case of beer and getting sloshed with him over the weekened.
2
According to Judiac traditions you are a woman at 12 and a man at 13.
2
@inksearcher But you don't consider the opposite a possibility? That people can be made to think ok things that happened to them are bad?
2
You don't go from a toddler to Confucius overnight at 18. 18 isn't even a remotely logical/biology based cut off for adulthood. Literally no society in the world considered a 16 year old a child before about 100 years ago. Society has gone completely insane.

@johnbarlow4572 The way society talks 16 year olds won't even be able to stay home without a baby sitter or cross the street without an adult until they turn 18 very soon. But of course we'll still be able to charge them as adults for crimes.

@Patrick-kt5mc Ugh, come on. This sounds so disingenuous. No magical switch flips at 18. It's a completely arbitrary, unscientific cut off for adulthood that was embraced by no society on the face of the Earth before about 100 years ago. Half of America loses their virginity prior to 18 and that probably doesn't bother you in the slightest. There are non-arbitrary ages you could use as a cut off for sexual relationships, but 18 isn't one of them.

I have mixed feelings about this. I don't exactly think this should be legal but at 16? I'm so sick of this superstitious fetish for the magical age of 18. If we're going to treat adulthood like some magical switch that flips overnight and turns you from a toddler to Confucius, shouldn't we at least chose a more natural number? No society in all of human history considered a 16 year old a child until about 100 years ago. This should be no more than a misdemeanor, like serving alcohol to a minor is.
1
12 and 16 are lightyears apart. Every single society on Earth prior to about 100 years ago would consider a 16 year old a man. Most would not consider a 12 year old a man.
1
Because Second Wave feminism taught us to view male sexuality as predatory. 16 is a little too young to be legal but I'm so sick of people pretending like some magical switch flips at 18 and you go from a toddler to Confucius overnight. No society in all of human history considered a 16 year old a child until about 100 years ago.
1
Is there a vast psychological difference, though, or just Second Wave Feminism brainwashing us into thinking of male sexuality as predatory? Because this "double standard" exists when it come to homosexual activity too, where the reaction is much more visceral if the perp is male.
1
@mikesully110 No, but they can be tried as adults.
1
Most of the time the impact is nothing but a sweet memory. I agree this shouldn't be legal, for the same reason serving alcohol to minor shouldn't be legal, but let's not get melodramatic. No magical switch flips at 18 and every single society before the 20th century considered a 16 year old an adult.

@The1stDukeDroklar Dude...that...stop, you're going to break my brain. If it's about who "wants it", why do we even have an age of consent in the first place? Why not just treat them like adult relationships, where as long as there's no force it's all okay?
1
@The1stDukeDroklar Have you ever considered you might just be brainwashed by Second Wave Feminism telling everyone male sexuality is evil and predatory? We used to marry off girls under 18 all the time.

They look pretty adult to me.
