  2. They might. Look at genetic engineering as it relates to transhumanism. We've just been sitting on that technology for 50 years.

  3. One thing that shocked me a few years back was to learn the first genetically modified animal was created in the 1970s. In sci-fi, whenever gene manipulation technology comes out (like ADAM in Bioshock) it takes the world by storm as people immediately try to become superhuman. Yet we've just been sitting on gene-altering technology for half a century. I wouldn't be surprised if AI takes a similar path, and people just become to scared with the implications and abandon it altogether.
