Comments by "Dennis" (@Dennis-nc3vw) on "Why Are You An Adult At Age 18?" video.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people can sincerely believe 18 as adulthood has a basis in biology. We all felt changes take place in our bodies and minds, but none of us felt anything happen at 18. It's like they'd rather believe a superstition than their lying eyes and their own lived experience.

@Cousinbiddy1 Girls on average finish puberty at 14 and guys at 15. That means they've reached their adult height and body shape at this age.
7
@Cousinbiddy1 That's a completely subjective and arbitrary statement. The average girl looks no more distinguishable between 14 and 18 than 18 and 22.

@uncertifiedlinguist8396 Brain development doesn't mean jack squat next to wisdom, and you never stop getting wiser. Besides, it's sick and unnatural to wait until someone's 25 to treat them as an adult, obviously nature wants you to be an adult well before that. Ever wonder why teenagers are so angsty, rebellious, independent minded, and hard to parent? Because nature is telling them to be adults, while society is telling them to be children. Teens used to stereotyped as happy-go-lucky.
4
God no. We used to consider kids adults at 12 - 15 and society didn't suffer in the slightest from it. God forbid we infantilize our youth even more.
4
You'll feel like a baby for as long as you're treated like one.
4
If you treat people like children, they'll be children indefinitely. Nobody knows this better than those of us who grew up as pampered rich kids. Dealing with society's ignorance is very frustrating.

George Washington started his own survey company at 15. Marquis LaFayette was 18 when America declared independence. Alexander the Great was 16 when he started conquering the world. When I think of the things teenagers used to accomplish, I feel so furious at what our society has done to adolescents.
3
@peace2033 No one feels like an adult until the moment society starts treating them like one.
3
@Cousinbiddy1 Yes I have, you're simply wrong. I mean, there are puberty stragglers at that age who still look young, but generally you're wrong.
3
@Cousinbiddy1 No, I'm just saying we should just understand 18 is an arbitrary age, instead of cowering behind it like some kind of law of nature.
3
No, in 1944 the voting age was 21.
2
@elonthegreat4712 It's not fully developed until 25.
2
@riddlesangerissues3127 The age of majority is not the same as the age of consent.
2
It's hard to believe the enlistment age went from 16 to 21between WWI and WWII.
2
You will feel like a kid until the moment you stop living like one.
2
My version would be 15 - Eligible to work part time 16 - Eligible to drive, consent, be tried as an adult, drop out of High School, work full time 18 - Everything else
2
@urmom-ne2oc About half of them have. Find me a single female guest on Dr. Phil 13 or over who couldn't pass for a college freshman.
2
You turn 60 you'll see a 30 year old as a child.
1
No. The body is usually fully physically developed before your 16th birthday.
1
@tbsupratom7232 You won't feel like an adult until the instant society treats you as one. Trust me. I say this as a 32 year old who grew up a pampered rich kid and knew a couple of guys who grew up just like me.
1
@leelee6000 No, you'll feel like a kid until the instant society stops treating you like one.
1
"Puberty is a process that takes place for several years. Most girls finish puberty by age 14. Most boys finish puberty by age 15 or 16" - family doctor dot org No one recognized the age of 18 as anything special until the emergence of the K-12 educational system.
1
No, in 1944 the voting age was 21. I thought this was common knowledge.
1
Nothing does, other than society treating you like one. Maturity doesn't spring up like body hair. I learned that the hard way as a pampered rich kid who got his first job at 23.
1
@uncertifiedlinguist8396 What "facts" support 18 as the cut off for adulthood? It's just a superstition.
1
You won't feel like an adult until the day society starts treating you like one. I can't repeat this enough.
1
@peace2033 You won't feel like an adult until society starts treating you as one. I cannot say that enough. Our society makes the fatal mistake of trying to put maturity before adulthood, but that just doesn't work. Treat someone like a child and they will be a child indefinitely.
1
@mrod8578 What? No. Girls on average finish puberty at 14. You can look that up.
1
Teenagers used to accomplish great things when we gave them the opportunity. 13 year old boys captained and captured ships in the American Revolution. Alexander the Great started conquering the world at 16. George Washington started his own surveying company at 15.
1
@chrisnarvaez3434 Working full time, getting married, etc. before 21 was extremely normal before the Vietnam War. It's normal

In Texas, 17 is the age of consent, and also when you are exclusively tried for crimes as an adult.
1
17 is the age of consent in Texas, and also when you can no longer be tried as a juvenile.
1
Alexander the Great was conquering the world at 16. Julius Ceasar was patriarch of his family at 16. Teens can accomplish great things when you let them, and "adults" can be children indefinitely when you don't.
1
I'm 32 and feel 24.
1
I used to think like you, but the truth is no matter how high we set the cut off for adulthood, people at the cusp will always seem like children, because they've never spent a day as an adult. We've been moving the goal post on adulthood for over 100 years now.
1
You will never grow up until you live like an adult. No one matures solely through biology.
1
K-12 education, most likely. I believe that proceeded this obsession with 18.
1
@elonthegreat4712 That's simply not true. Puberty ends, on average, at 14 for girls and 15 for boys. There's no more difference between a 14 and 18 year old girl than an 18 and 22 year old.
1
@elonthegreat4712 Nor is "start to look like an adult."
1
You won't feel like an adult until the day society starts treating you like such. Back when I was your age I thought like you did too. Now I can't put to words how much I detest that line of thinking. No matter how high we raise the age of adulthood, people on its precipice will always be immature because they have no experience "adulting." Adulthood must come before maturity, not the other way around.
1
@leftanutstainonyourcouch.5196 No you don't. Teenagers are the most miserable and suicidal people on the planet right now. You're falling for the Hedonist Paradox. It's all an illusion.
1
@michael4485 Firearms at 21 seems alright, considering there are some firearms you can't purchase even at 56.
1
@Cousinbiddy1 This is youtube, I can't post links. Plus, no, I don't know anyone personally who is that age right now, although my cousin visited the area when she was 15 a year or so ago. Plus browsing instagram you often find 14/15 year old girls in your feed.
1
@Cousinbiddy1 Yes. It's a scientific facts girls finish puberty on average at 14, and boys at 15. Watch some Dr. Phil. Teenagers just look like adults.
1
You won't feel like an adult until you live like one. Sincerely, a 32 year old.
