If they would murder their own people for being part of the wrong religion/religious sect, what do you think they'd do to Americans? There was an area in Iraq called "The Sunni Triangle" where the insurgency de facto won. Things got so bad, half the insurgents switched sides and started fighting for the US (it was called The Anbar Awakening). The other half stayed behind and would later become ISIS. That's what you were fighting.

So most people who fought in Iraq in 2003 joined up around 2000 or 2001. So it's not entirely a choice. You can end up fighting a war you knew nothing about when you signed up.
