Comments by "Dennis" (@Dennis-nc3vw) on "What makes Thomas Jefferson so controversial? - Frank Cogliano" video.
This video was grossly biased. They didn't mention the Northwest Ordinance (legislation Jefferson authored to prevent slavery from expanding into the new Norther territories), or the similar legislation for new Southern territories he tried to pass but failed by one vote. And that bit about Sally Hemmingway was completely factophobic. Only 1 of her six children had DNA from Jefferson's family, not even necessarily Thomas. In fact Thomas was old and sickly at the time, not exactly the sort of thing that puts you in the mood get jiggy with one of your slaves. One of her other descendants took the DNA test and it came back negative. So it's a complete lie to say he fathered all six of her children, and baseless claim to even say he fathered 5.

This isn't a good video. The information on Sally Hemmings is almost completely false (all we know is 1 of her 6 children had DNA from someone in the Jefferson family, and one definitely did not), and they don't mention the Northwest Ordinance which stopped the expansion of slavery into the northern territories. Nor do they mention Jefferson's attempt to pass similar legislation for the South, which failed by one vote.

Wow, some real key points overlooked here, very disappointed in Ted Ed: 1) Jefferson authored the Northwest Ordinance, forbidding slavery from spreading into new Northern territories 2) Jefferson tried to enact similar legislation for new Southern territories, but this failed by one vote 3) One ONLY child of Sally's was proven to have Jefferson DNA, and it wasn't necessarily Thomas' DNA. We know one of her six children was definitely NOT fathered by a Jefferson.

@trackingthecoreofstuffandm2310 So why did Jefferson try to ban the expansion of slavery into the new territories (something this video doesn't mention). Wouldn't that shrink the market for his slaves?

@petermj1098 And yet a descendant of that child she had in Paris took a DNA test and it showed they did not have Jefferson DNA. Only 1 of her 6 children, her final one, was proven to have Jefferson DNA, and like OP said it could have been anyone in the Jefferson family.

They gloss over all he did to stop the expansion of slavery into the new territories he acquired. He succeeded with the north, failed with the south by one vote.

@ninedaysqueen301 Only one of Sally's children as proven to have Jefferson DNA, and not even necessarily Thomas Jefferson. That was her latest child. The descendant of another one of her offspring took a DNA test and it came back negative for Thomas' DNA.

No, this one was very poor. It totally ignored Jefferson's role in preventing slavery from expanding into the new territories (successfully in the north, unsuccessfully in the south). It also repeated the lie about Sally Hemmings. The FACT is ONE of her children had Jefferson DNA, and it could have been anyone in Tommy's family. One of her other children's descendant took a DNA test and it came back negative.

Even on slavery his record was overwhelmingly positive. He made Virginia one of the first jurisdictions in the world to ban the import of slaves. He signed the bill that stopped the import of slaves into the United States. And he authored the Northwest Ordinance, which stopped slavery from expanding into the new northern territories. He even tried to author the same for the southern territories but it failed by one voice.

I never even heard of James Polk.
