Exactly, "MAP" is a disingenuous euphemism. When we hear "minor" we think of someone in their mid/late teens.

@arunparkin2552 Thank you, I'm so sick of people pretending they don't know what puberty is and pretending its all about '18'. Minors teens are young and naive and need legal protection IMO but pretending puberty has nothing to do with when you should be sexually active is every bit as perverse and deluded as pretending whether you have a penis or vagina has no bearing on whether you should be raised as a boy or a girl. Few people are brave enough to admit it but issues involving pubescent minors are more morally complicated, because while teens are still stupid (though intellectually lightyears ahead of 5 year olds), the behavior is natural. A stallion is dumb as a 1 year old human child but you don't call a stallion put to stud an abuse victim, because its fulfilling its natural imperatives.

My sister formed a platonic friendship with a 16 year old girl at her job when she was 31 (didn't even realize it until she was invited to her birthday). And back when I worked at Taco Bell, all my coworkers, who ranged from 16 - 31, hung out together. Coworkers regularly form friendships with age gaps of 5+ years.

@Badookum 17 is fine in my book. There's something that feels seriously wrong saying you can die for your country, take out a $200,000 loan, and vote for President on your 18th birthday but can't even get into a relationship the day before. We need to stop looking at adulthood as all or nothing.

You're playing their game by making this about teenagers. Why do you think they chose the term "Minor Attracted Person"? Because that brings to mind an older teenager, ie "I got arrested for selling alcohol to a minor, turns out the kid was 16!" These people are into kids under 12. Don't pretend its all the same if they're under 18, and the guy in the Free Candy Van is the same as your grandpa who married your grandma at 15. You know its not.

@Mike-xh2vm You base that on absolutely nothing. Puberty finishes on average for girls at 14 and and boys at 15. You can look that up. I'm not even saying that should be the AOC, it's just a scientific fact. Nothing happens at 20.

This sick cycle of youth infantilization needs to stop. Alexander the Great was conquering the world at 16. Alexander Hamilton was running a shipping company at 14. People on the precipice of adulthood will always appear immature, no matter how high we raise that age, because they have no experience "adulting." I grew up a pampered rich kid and didn't get my first job until 23. Guess what? I was fired almost immediately from the first 2 of 3. You don't become an adult until the day soceity starts treating you like one.

"Minor" brings to mind an image of someone in their mid/late teens, ie "Turns out the kid was 16, so I got arrested for serving alcohol to a minor." I think its an intentionally deceptive term.

@Aditya1998pandey Pedophilia is measured objectively by puberty. Age of consent is different and somewhat arbitrary, but so is when to try someone as an adult, allow them to drive, allow them to vote, etc. Sometimes the law has to rely on arbitrary distinctions.

@wheresmyeggs It feels really wrong to say someone can be drafted into the war the same day they can choose who to sleep without being considered an abuse victim, and seeing the things teens used to accomplish throughout history I'm not willing to raise the drafting age. I think age of consent should be 16 or 17. Sex is not all fun and games but its not the most "adult" thing you can do either (like taking out a $200,000 loan or going to war). There's this really disturbing trend to treat adulthood/childhood as all or nothing. At the current trajectory you'll be able to run for President when you turn 18 but won't be able to stay home without a baby sitter the day before that. I was a pampered rich kid who met other pampered rich kids and saw how childishness can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you're treated as a child you remain a child forever. So I'm very passionate about this.

@brettschmidt5929 A stallion is dumber than a 1 year old child but no one claims its being abused if it's put to stud. The giant elephant in the room no one wants to talk about is that sex with small children is fricking unnatural and that's the real reason it causes so much psychological trauma. It's not simply that kids are dumb and therefore can't consent.

There are two kinds of adulthood: 1) Biological adulthood. This is when nature wants you to leave the nest and make babies. I think 99% of us know this is in your early teens, even though we act ignorant of this fact. That's when nature gives you your adult height and shape, makes you fertile, gives you sexual urges, makes you resentful towards the authority of your parents, unafraid of being left alone, etc. 2) Philosophical adulthood. This is when society thinks you are old enough to deserve full freedom and accountability. Only humans ever reach this stage of adulthood. Determining the first is very easy. Determining the second is not so easy. However, I think both should be taken into account. A stallion has the intelligence of a 1 year old child but you don't expect it to be traumatized when its put to stud because it's reached adulthood number 1.

The Shape of Water is about a woman who falls in love with a fishman thing that doesn't even talk and might be no more intelligent than a dog. Forest Gump is a movie about a woman who falls in love with a man who's brain is so underdeveloped his favorite book is Curious George. I don't doubt they can feel romantic love. If sexuality can find itself in such an odd place, is stands to reason romantic attraction can too. But that's ultimately not the question that matters.
