  1. His Japanese level is native. It means he has read almost all of the books that an educated Japanese person has read. He understand that language is culture, and culture is language. What he's saying is that without understanding the history, culture, mindset...you cannot engage in a meaningful intellectual conversation. And frankly, if you cannot read a Japanese newspaper and understand it, you're illiterate in Japan.
