The West has made me very happy in its response to both Russia and China. Three years ago Russia and China would be regarded as friends and good trading partners in Berlin, Paris or London (USA was the exception on China due to Trump). Since then, unbelievably quickly, the tables have completely turned. The current elections in London are a great example - both UK candidates have proclaimed their beliefs and strategies in dealing with Russia and China as the greatest threats to the free world. Trump has come out and said he seeks "to destroy Russia as a state". Biden has formed AUKUS, easily approved tens of billions in support in Ukraine through Congress and is creating the basis for a NATO/Asia partnership through Japan, Australia, India and South Korea. The Germans and French (fickle, jealous and particularly difficult people) have not gone against a single serious sanction or NATO statement (this is progress - we fought the Germans just 70 years ago - we cannot expect them to be Canadians overnight). Mainland Europe has never been united so strongly EVER (I know there is plenty of room for improvement but that does not change the fact this is the best it has ever been). The "West" even seems to be becoming a less defined, more global term; the UN vote on Ukraine shows us that. Japan as fully committed herself to be the bastion of defense of western values protecting the Western shores of the USA.
I know everything is far from perfect. I know there is plenty to complain about. I know there are challenges ahead. But keep this in mind - just over 70 years ago, when our grandparents were our age, half of the world was being overrun by tyrants. Germany was an ethnostate killing millions in concentration camps. Japan was a military dictatorship, committing atrocities beyond imagine across all of Asia and having the gall to attack the USA - the home base for global democracy. The Soviet Union was a communist powerhouse but was potentially going to fall to the Nazis - meaning over half of the worlds landmass would be under the tyrannical, ethnostate, socialist Nazi regime. The other large area of Asia, China, was in a deep Civil War where no one knew the future or whether Japan would control all of Asia. The United kingdom, and its sacred capital of London, was being bombed daily and its invasion was imminent.
I cannot imagine a world like this. We have done such a good job of consolidating the power held by the people of the world; meaning the global strength of democracy, human rights, free speech, freedom of religion and the pursuit of happiness. At one time in our history this was a very radical idea and only a small population of Greeks, well overpowered by the King of the Persian Empire, were the only people who had the rights given to them by god protected by their government.
In finality, the West must ensure Russia suffers for this genocide. Russia must be completed kept out of the global system our ancestors fought millenniums for us to have. China is already facing its reckoning and will stagnate; I could go further into detail but that's a whole separate issue. The CCP will not manage to stay in power or much less continue growing. We are close to a globe in which all humans have the protections of the divinity given to them by the universe; we must not falter now.
