It’s important to note regarding the mineral wealth in Africa - not to knock Africa but “rare earth minerals” aren’t actually rare, that’s just what they’re called. And also, it’s likely that other important mineral deposits will be found now that we need them. For example, the largest known lithium deposit was just found in the US .. this year! Now people are motivated to look. Remember how in the early 2000s everyone said we were running out of oil? Well the. We found the Permian Basin and fracking I like Africa a lot but the mineral and energy cards are not going to be the strongest hands to play against the West (the US has all the rare earths, lithium, oil, etc it needs). I think the best hand it can play is it’s robust populations and consumer markets. Africa has very high birth rates and huge populations - access to sell things to those people is the hand to play. There’s no serious dependence on any African resource but access to a booming consumer market is certainly something the economic powers of the US, the EU and China would all love to have

@AbuilyasalAryanee whatever the premium is on not having to deal with terrible infrastructure, coups, criminality, bribes, etc - it does not warrant a catastrophic event for the West. There is a cost to stability -

@benoitbvg2888 Africa sucks but it’s the only place that would be open to Russian diplomacy. It’s embarrassing for Russia. Much less China who has a total of one friend geopolitically (North Korea - wow another winner)

Idk. Putting hundreds of billions of dollars into infrastructure for nations that have just undergone civil war and are under constant coups is something I think we should let the Chinese do. Sure, they could retake the investment, but at the same time, these leaders could also just say “nah you can’t have it back” and station 10,000 troops at it. It ain’t like the good old days when you could just straight up colonize a nation. The belt and road initiative was mainly just to offload excess production within China. I’m not worried about this. If the West wants long term influence in Africa, I think the bet to make is “see? We didn’t do anything when you want to work with China and Russia. We won’t force you to do anything. But we also won’t back coups in your country or get you into debt traps” Liberalism. Is it the future or not? That’s really what’s at play here. Will Africa prefer to work with dictators or rule of law nations in the long run?

This is definitely not true lmao - plus, you should be saying the Spanish and English empires anyways - France never was on par with the Spanish empire China building roads in bum f*** Africa is about 1,000 times different from colonizing it. Worst case the African nation can just say “yeah sorry China we aren’t paying you back” and station 10,000 troops at the project. And every nation has a base in Djibouti

@marcelo55869 dude. Globalization, meaning all international trade, only occurs because of the Western alliance lmao. And I don’t pity Africans. They don’t want to be treated as subjects of a colony - fine. Then let’s cut deals. The West has no obligation to help Africans just like Africa has no obligation to help Europeans (which they’ve never once done). Business is quite literally collaboration. That’s what trade deals are. Work with China of Africa wants. The harsh truth is that Africa has almost zero geopolitical importance and the West doesn’t need a single thing from Africans. They don’t invent anything, they constantly live in chaos, they’re ungrateful from aid given to them and they don’t have any important resources that impact the West. If Africans want collaboration then they should learn to be useful. You don’t collaborate with idiots

@PermadeathHD what am I coping about? The very harsh truth is that the entire continent of Africa is basically useless. The people don’t develop or invent anything, there’s enormous corruption, many Africans live like Stone Age people, they don’t have any resources that make much of a difference and they never build anything useful. Ever. There’s no company or discovery or anything that Africans have done that matters at all. If you want my honest opinion, Africa is a complete waste of time. They’re poor, illiterate, drug riddled and corrupt. Let them spear their zebras and the West will continue onto colonizing space Sucks to suck

@t.n.h.ptheneohumanpatterna8334 Italy cut a deal to buy some of their energy. Not much else to be said about it imo

@Newbmann the people here are failing to understand how powerful and rich the Western alliance is. So the West is supposed to spend unlimited blood and treasure on Africa…. Because they have diamonds? We already have everything we need. If the Africans can manage not to fall into a civil war every ten years and sell us some oil, great. If not, it makes no difference I see Russia and China spending their resources on “winning” Africa as either a ploy to divert Western nations away from more important goals or as a sign of how weak their international influence is. Imagine this. Macron is sitting down with US presidents, the Ukrainian president, the leaders of almost the entirety of Europe…… and Putin is sitting down with a Nigerian leader. If we are going back to the good old days of influence, then we also go back to racism, and frankly this would have been seen as completely beneath a Soviet leader. Can you imagine Stalin spending serious time to win over a dictator of some dirt poor black nation? It’s embarrassing. I don’t think this way but the Russians and Chinese 10000000% think this way.

@benoitbvg2888 we just let China do the rare earth stuff because no American wants to be doing that. Same with steal. It’s definitely not any serious leverage over the West. We can cutoff Chinas oil supplies. It’s not even comparable. The US is already taking steps to be prepared in the situation China goes into all our war with rare earths. It’s easy but it’s dirty work. And again, rare earths aren’t rare. At all. There’s plenty of them

@DanTan_81 lmao right..... China has super healthy birth rates I've seen and definitely has a TON of consumer spending. Those are both extremely accurate statements. Did you see Indonesia signed a security defensive agreement with the US military yesterday? Why would Indonesia, Vietnam and the Phillipines sign defensive agreements with the US when the next world power in China is right there??? Its almost like..... China isn't the next world power and instead the Western alliance system is actively growing and getting larger....hmmmm

@thegoodpimps I agree with this. The US has acted as the stabilizing power for Europe and much of Asia/Africa. We guarantee free trade globally which allows small nations to develop
