  1. Australia doesn't integrate its immigrants anywhere near as well as America seems to - we could study why, but it requires having a nation building focus, instead of celebrating our differences - that is probably unpalatable to those who have a vested interest in maintaining the status qou.

  2.  Matt  There is diversity in talent and experince, but social cohesion necessary to build a nation comes from a unified population who share the same fundamental goals for the country .

  3.  Matt  If I take America as the example, people rallying around their constitution - that is very unifying and cuts across all sectors of society irrespective of race, religion, colour, creed or social status.

  5.  Matt  Their country, like ours, has powerful influences undermining their society, but their social cohesion is underpinned by their constitution which affords them freedoms we simply don't have in this nation, such as freedom of speech. In practice, it is more complex than that simply because businesses and authorities have been getting away with discrimination, but nobody cna go to jail for expressing their opinions and if they do, they have a constitution that will uphold their rights. With freedom though, comes responsibility - and the wrong influences ill undermine that . They face their struggles for sure, but overall, Americans from what I observe by and large are proud to be American, where I don't see much of that in Australia.
