The Chinese army never went into HK. It was always the HK police. And the HK police was 10 X more restrained than any police force in the US. The black lives matter movement shows that. The national security law should be compared to the US's 1917 foreign esponiage law, which carries the death penalty. One person charge with the 1917 law was Scott Ritter, this is the US marine Lt Col who led the UN inspection team for WMD's in Iraq. When he declared there were no WMD's in Iraq, the FBI charged him with the 1917 foreign esponiage law.

@mellon3891 But in losing these wars, we've spent trillions of dollars on US contractors. Which was one of the main reason for the wars.

As many pointed out invasion is not easy, even if preceeded by a massive missle attack and 1000's of drones identifying remaining military targets for more missile strikes for weeks. It's still a high risk move. If Taiwan declares independence, what is much more likely is a blockade. Missiles from the mainland can hit cargo ships and planes going to or leaving Taiwan. Also insurance for all ships/planes will cease once this is a war zone so commercial trade will stop. Smuggling operations will get stuff in/out but that's not the point, 99% of commerce will stop. This will put huge economic pressure on the US and Europe because of semiconductors from Taiwan. And it will put huge economic pressure on Taiwan when energy and other raw materials are kept out. So while there will be Chinese warships patrolling 100 miles from Taiwan on all sides, they are not necessary to enforce the blockade. A blockade forces either Taiwan or the US to fire the 1st shot. A shot that would have a significant response.
