  1. I used to hang out with Adolf Jr. (we called him "Dolphy") years ago. A nice guy, easygoing, always ready to order a round for his buddies. Politics for him was all bullshit. His big interest was flower arranging. He tried to open a florist shop but he was a lousy businessman, and it went out of business after only a year. But his arrangements were really nice! He'd go around with bouquets of flowers -- arranged by himself! -- in the entertainment/bar/red light district, selling his bouquets to drunks and druggies who wanted to do something nice for the ladies who worked the streets and gave them "freebies" when they were a little short of cash. Dolphy the Flower Guy was always good for a laugh -- his dirty jokes were real gems! i once asked him why he didn't do a little pimping on the side, and he got embarrassed and wouldn't answer. But he did tell me the one about the woman who put an egg up her --- well, let's say I forgot how it went. Dolphy was really close with the slim blond priest who ran St. Milbert's Church down by the river. He used to make the flower arrangements for the altar. He sort of lived in the rectory with Father Twinkie (that's what we called him -- he had a Polish name nobody could pronounce). I guess they did a lot of praying together -- if you know what I mean. Dolphy used to talk about his dad when he was a little (actually a lot) soused. He never met him, of course, but he had seen movies and photos of him. He liked watching his dad "squeal" (as he called it) and get applauded by all those people (he didn't know German). He wished his dad had ditched the moustache -- he said it made him look weird. Anyhoo, I lost sight of Dolphy when I moved to Omaha. I heard from a pal who was passing through town a few years later that Dolphy wasn't selling flowers any more. I says "So what's he doing?" He says "He's pushing them up from below." Next time I'm in San Antone (that's where he wound up) I'll try to drop by the cemetery and leave a few flowers on Dolphy's grave. Nice guy, but kinda sad.
