They sure aren't the cold, calculating killers you see in movies or that the gun lobby wants you to think they are (see the FBI's Active Shooter profile).

  3. The gun lobby, led by the NRA, uses very carefully scripted debating tactics. They give you simplistic black and white scenarios that rarely exist in real life, ignore the most common problems and force the argument into their own terms of reference. The NRA lies as naturally as it breathes. In particular, this includes claims about countries banning guns and crime rates skyrocketing. No country in the world has a 100% gun ban, not even North Korea. They rely on very few people having enough information or motivation to root out this disinformation and show it up for what it is. They try to herd you into the idea that either everyone is allowed to own guns or that nobody is allowed to have guns. They do this to shut down any debate on reasonable gun laws.

  4.  @1911dawg  Yeah, that assumption doesn't take into account that the risk to a criminal is greater with a knife than with a gun. Furthermore, between 68 and 70% of murders in the United States are committed with guns. So, in fact, guns are more deadly than knives on two counts, the first one being that they can be used at greater range, giving the user a much better chance and a better likelihood of a lethal outcome and secondly they are simply used more often.

That situation exists in pretty much every Western society - drugs, mental health issues, violent video games... the rest of us have all got those problems but we have much lower rates of gun ownership and much lower rates of gun violence.
