China's system focus on merit rather than popularity. In the West, the politician who gets most of the votes will be in power. A person who is popular, even if he is only a comedy actor but with no any experience of running a government, can still be in charge of the country. In China, this would not be the case. All of the leaders of the state must have the experience of ruling provinces with more than 100 million people. Such prerequisite prevents people who lack ability in power.

Yes, a good point has been pointed out in the talk, which is that the information reported by the media is clearly outdated. Lots of foreigners still think that China is a country with many bicycles running on the streets, lots of queues line up for not sufficient goods, and people wearing similar style clothing with a few colors to choose, green, navy blue and grey. I can't say such impression is totally incorrect because those are things existed in China in the past. But such stereotype clearly mismatches the reality of today's China.
