DMT Care to explain wtf race and gender has to do with this presentation?
14
Michael did you even listen to the presentation?

Nick That doesn't touch on an answer to my question why DMT would even mention race or gender. But I will say that it's going to be a new world in which old political and economic theory no longer apply. When everyone from investment bankers to long haul truck drivers both face threats to their livelihood, notions of work and class have changed.

DMT Ahh ok. You weren't being sarcastic as I expected. Thanks for explaining :)

ThatKid I refuse to believe that your reading comprehension is that poor. You surely must just be trolling.

Carson. Cool. Now we add special pleading to the list. You're on a roll now. A few more and we'll have a text book case. And in public domain too, so no charge. Thanks buddy!
4
Carson, it's quite clear that you don't. That's why I have decided to stop. I don't abuse animals, kids, or the disabled.

Carson that's a whole lot of assertion with not a wit of evidence or support. Not very impressive., nor compelling. You tossing out names suggests you're just a tad insecure in your positions. But of bluster to distract?

Carson That's pretty much what I expected from you: more bluster and much ado about nothing. You add a bit more ad hominem and general insults. Further, you show your ignorance about modes of discourse. The assertions, all of them, are yours. The burden of proof is yours. Don't try to shift it on me to distract from your posturing. Once again, not impressive, nor compelling. Just to be clear, I'm not taking a position. I'm just skeptical about that wide swatch of generalizations you tossed.

Cassandra Marketing and advertising exist to manufacture need. This was made clear in the early days of TV. At first magazine, newspaper and TV spots were informative and made useful comparisons. Now they only fuel our desires to belong and "signal" status by creating moods and "lifestyles." Think about it. When was the last time you saw a spot on TV with useful information? I think our consumer mentality is manufactured. It can just as easily be swept aside. That leaves your question of what happens then...

This was a great presentation. I liked the scope when he talked with compassion but used facts to make projections. Thanks TED!

Evolver You can extend the concept beyond that. Some archaeologists have used Marx' concept of surplus value to measure how well off a population is, by looking at the work put into an object beyond the requirements of mere utility. The null hypothesis is something like a group just barely surviving will not have the energy or time to put into embellishment. This works with what you mention to provide the hooks that marketers use to spur consumption. It goes to show comfort and status.
