That's one side of it, BUT, there were several other cases, where either, the parents -didn't want their children back, or, had no home to house them, or, where children didn't want, to go back ; mostly because they had a good time in the country, and /or, their carerer's loved them more. Sad on different levels.

Born in 1941, in Birmingham, my earliest memory is, sitting in my 'Push-Chair in the garden, aged about 2--3, And very fast fighter planes, whizzing overhead, very low and noisy. The Spitfire Factory at Castle Bromwhich, was only about 7 miles away. I've since learned that the very Brave Ladies of the ATA, collected the new planes, and flew them to front-line bases. maybe that's what i saw.

Putting aside Dowdings belief in Spiritulism, everything about this man, epitimised the true heroic image ,of the traditional British HERO. Also, I am surprised that Keith Parks brilliant organising ability ,at this crucial historic time, was not given more time here. I did not know, that both great men, had been so disgracefully treated. It seems, the familiar 'old-boy ' network, was in full flow, and no doubt, Freemasonry.

I was born in 1941, and lived about ten miles from the Spitfire factory, at Castle Bromwich, near Birmingham. At the age of 2 to 4, One of my earliest memories, is of sitting in my Pushchair, in the garden, and seeing , hearing, very noisey and fast planes, roaring over our house. With no other airfields nearby, these were without doubt, new Spitfires being tested, and /or flown, by those heroic ladies of the ATA.

@andrewtongue7084 Well said Andrew , you're right in every way. However, there is of course, also an argument as to whether it was an American war at all, especially WW1. Some say that it was ,after all, a European war, among the Royal families, who were all linked together, and could have, should have, prevented it. As for WW2, that was a totally different scenario, against a vicious tyranny, that really did threaten the worlds freedom , and became , inevitably, a World War. That War, could not have been won without the American's vast wealth, armament production capabilities, and it's huge contribution from it's brave people. But, with the WW1 centenary last year 2018, and the 75th anniversary of 'D' Day this year, 2019. WE ALL MUST NEVER FORGET THOSE, WHO WILL NEVER GROW OLD.

@stevenhoman2253 That's far to rigid. We will never know, but, look at the benefits it gave the RAF. OR, what would be the scenario, without those benefits? WHEN were the planes coming? WHAT direction? WHAT formations? WHAT speed ? All this info, decided the size of our response, and when. The Luftwaffe Pilot 's main complaint was--'They were always there, waiting for us''. it was very disconcerting for them. We, didn't have to keep planes on patrol all the while, and THEY were often at their maximum range, for fuel. THOSE RADAR FACTS ARE, the winning benefits.

BIG QUESTION; given that the Soviets had beaten the Americans into Space, in the middle of the cold War, and the huge advantage in propaganda over their hated rivals. WHY didn't the Soviets spill the beans about the fake Moon project? After all, THEY failed many times and lost several Cosmanauts, including women. ANSWER---the CIA found out that Yuri Gagarin's --'FIRST MAN IN SPACE'' was ALSO FAKE. a BBC TV documentary a few years ago, had 3 former Soviet Rocket Scientists, with original film, told how Gagarin was 'officially'' chosen, because he was a young and good looking Jet Fighter Pilot, and would make better propaganda, around the world. ONLY, he wasn't very good, so they faked his take-off. Climbing into the Module waving, and out a secret back exit, and driven away. His roll was taken be a senior, older cosmanaut . SO--the deal was --you keep schtum and so will we. Gagarin later became a bit of a drunk, with a loose tonque, and was killed much later, in a mysterious plane crash.

NOT A BAD ANALOGY, BUT DO WATCH ''37 DAYS'', A BRILLIANT MINUTE BY MINUTE ACCOUNT OF WHAT LED UP TO WW1. A WONDERFUL BBC TV DOCUDRAMA IN 3 ONE HOUR PARTS. NOW ON DVD. ORIGINAL UNSEEN DOCUMENTS AND PERSONAL LETTERS, BY AND FROM ALL THOSE DECISION MAKER'S INVOLVED, FROM THE KAISER AND HIS WAR MAD GENERALS, TO BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, VISCOUNT EDWARD GREY, CHURCHILL GEORGE THE 5TH AND SO ON. ALL BERILLIANTLY PLAYED OUT BY GREAT ACTORS, BRITISH AND GERMAN. YOU WILL SEE THAT THE WAR ALMOST NEVER HAPPEND, AS IT SEE--SAWS BACK AND FORTH , WITH BRITAIN TRYING DESPERATELY ,NOT TO GET INVOLVED, UNTIL THE VERY LAST MINUTE. LOOKING BACK, AND AT WHAT THE GERMANS DID, AND THE CONSEQUENCES FOR BRITAIN, WE REALLY HAD NO CHOICE.

@rnstoo1 CORRECT !! THE ATA , WAS FORMED IN 1940. BUT PRETTY MUCH THE SAME WARTIME WORK, BEGAN IN WW1, WITH THE SAME ANXIETIES OVER THE MEN RETURNING FROM WAR , TO FIND THAT THE WOMEN HAD KEPT THE JOBS, A REAL THREAT, SEEING AS THE WOMEN WERE PAID A MUCH LOWER RATE THAN THE MEN, AN INSENTIVE FOR THE EMPLOYER'S ,NOT TO LET THE WOMEN GO. ANYWAY, UNEMPLOYMENT BECAME HUGE ANYWAY, ONCE THE NEED FOR ARMAMENTS ETC ETC , HAD FALLEN MASSIVELY AT WARS END.

@rogerusa9696 AND, according to several gatherings over the years, of Military Historians, of ALL countries ,during WW2, allied and foe, concluded; Had Britain been invaded and lost, the Nazis would have won the war. The reasons are complex, and need seeking out, if there is doubt; BUT, just one remark, by former Soviet Union boss , Nikita Kruschev, underlines Britains Importance; In one of Kruschevs rants, at the UN, in the 60's, about Western beligerence, he warned'' On the first day, of WW3, that unsinkable Aircraft Carrier'' ( Britain), will be sunk'' ! This was a back-handed compliment, to the fact, that Britain had not only been a massive holding place, and Airstrip for US planes, AND, the jumping off point for the attack on Fortress Europe, without it, we could not have helped the Russians, ie no second front, or massive supply lines, WE ALL, would have been slaves.

There's one important fact, that often get's overlooked; In the late 1930's, Rolls Royce applied for financial help, from the government, to continue developing their new ''Merlin'' Aero engine. They turned Rolls down, stating that the alloted finances for that year, had already been spent. So RR dug deep into their own coffer's, and found enough to continue----creating the War winning engine, that had no equal. Think of the planes, that became great, as a result of that decision , by RR. DID IT WIN THE WAR?----IT WAS CERTAINLY A MAJOR CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. BUT THANK CHRIST MITCHELL WAS TALKED OUT OF CALLING THE SPITFIRE ''THE SHREW''.

@home2039 TRUE, despite the well planned national food rationing scheme, and a monumental effort by our farming community, and 'Land Army Girls', our probability of loosing the War, through starvation, was high. Churchill wrote, in his post War Memoirs, that the only issue that scared him, was the U Boat menace. By 1943, the U Boat Fear , with great help from our US cousins, WE turned that huge danger around. BUT, WE won't forget.
