  1. Americans have more 'land of plenty' material things than at any other time in the history of the world! My mother told me about growing up poor in a family of ten during the Great Depression (not that long ago) and they were lucky to get a piece of fruit and a piece of candy in their Christmas stocking. There was no money for presents - if they wanted to eat!
