If the check valve is bad you'll have a hard brake pedal if you press it after shutting the engine off and waiting. (Of course you naturally only get a couple presses, but it shouldn't be instantly hard. You may have a failing booster, sounds like it's leaking at light input. Got a scan tool that can show fuel trims? If you do, warm up the car and observe your short term fuel trim, press and hold your brakes and see if the fuel trim goes more positive and stays there till you let off the brake. Might be able to shut off the engine and hold partial brake, if the pedal goes hard then it is leaking, but you still have to rule out the check valve, maybe pinch off the hose first.
