  1.  @Vagabond_Etranger  all hybrids still have the 12v battery. If you can hear your engine start and it sounds like any other car (whirr whirr whirr) then your car uses a 12v starter. If it silently comes to life (engine is just magically running without a starter noise) then it uses a high voltage motor on the back of the engine. I think Honda still uses a traditional starter, but I haven't kept up with the newer cars. The older ones were fine when the hybrid battery failed and just ran like any other car.

  2. It depends upon the car. Some don't have a 12v starter and they require the high voltage battery to be functioning to start.
