I'm happy with this. It was never about being hostile to our EU immigrants and guests, it was about self-determination and preventing the torrent of people from non-EU nations who hold culturally antithetical views. I don't know whether a soft border with Ireland will work, but I guess if they are strong about enforcing their borders and passengers from Northern Ireland must show passports to travel to the UK it works just fine. The important thing to me is not to send a message to our residents from the EU that they are unwelcome. Guests from France, Germany, Scandinavia, the Baltic states are all welcome as long as they abide by British law. I hope that they can now take some heart from their assured status, and that their neighbours can treat them with a bit of respect once more. It would nice to see the outright racists in British society have to crawl back under their rocks.
