He wasted 40 million and then tried to hide 2 million whilst declaring bankrupcy - that means he was literally robbing from people he owed money. He absolutely deserves this.

@Padoshee You have seriously misplaced sympathies Thomas. This is not some little guy who lost his life savings on a failed cornershop. He pissed away 40 MILLION POUNDS, and still owed millions. He lived a life of massive luxury on other people's ticket, then tried to hang onto what he had left rather than repaying it. What about all the people he owed? Where is your sympathy for them? What about the problems his actions caused them? He had the benefits, and now THEY'RE the ones left with the tab. The fact that lots of people do it is irrelevant. Lots of people try to get away with murder, does that make it okay? The fact that you think his adultery has anything to do with this suggests that you have some odd sense of empathy towards him.

Must not have paid enough to the Tory's campaign fund. Hard to have any sympathy for a man who pissed away 40 times more than most of us will see in a lifetime.

@Padoshee We could certainly have a conversation about when imprisonment is an appropriate punishment for ANY crime. Of course this is not murder - for that he'd receive at least five times as long a sentence. As for the fact it was loan companies, are you CERTAIN that's the only people he stole from? And who do you think ultimately pays for their losses? All other borrowers in the form of increased interest rates. What difference does it make if other celebrities get away with it? All that does is highlights a flaw in our justice system. Also, yes, of course we would prefer violent criminals be incarcerated, but I wasn't aware it was a binary choice. I have seen articles about viiolent criminals being released due to the number of celebrities hogging the spaces. The very fact that he is not a British citizen (then why does he owe British taxes?), would surely make him a flight risk for non custodial sentences.

@Padoshee Infuriatingly sentencing has ALWAYS been wildly inconsistent Thomas because despite sentencing guidelines, the sentences in each case are determined by opinion of individuals. If a judge's partner left them the night before, that might give you an extra 20% within the range of options. If Becker was a UK citizen, I'd agree that perhaps tagging might be more appropriate, but he is not. Once he leaves, it may be impossible to force him to serve a sentence. I agree with your premise that he is low on the hierarchy of criminal impact. As the victim of a recent crime where the serial offender received a pathetic 8 week sentence, there are cases where I'd happily chop body parts off. That said, I am actually generally in favour of treating criminals with some humanity in prisons. Norway has far better outcomes and lower recidivism by not having a vengeful justice system.
