I wonder how good her knowledge of Wales or Scotland is? And I'm sorry, but people find very obese people distasteful to watch. Rather than blaming the system, blame your inability to say no to food.

I don't know - all borders are artificial in one sense, but very real in another. Are you suggesting that the people in rural southern Ireland have much in common culturally with the people living in the northern cities that have fought for decades?

@lynchthis1 No, not at all. There were multiple issues raised, but throughout, she was complaining how unfair it is that obese women don't get the big roles. I actually thought that her whining detracted from an otherwise rather good video.

@christophercrowley7574 At my school, we learned about the Magna Carta, the Crusades, Queen Victoria, The Romans, ancient Egypt, the two world wars, the industrial revolution, the irish potato famine, and maybe some stuff about America. History was one hour a week and it was incredibly boring. I love some areas of history now, but the syllabus and delivery at school left a lot to be desired. That said, you've mentioned your were taught about a wrong that was done to you in history, but how much more were you taught about the history of Ireland?

@brianmmacu Ignorance of history? It's hard enough to live in the MODERN world without looking back hundreds of years. I find that a strong sense of history can be a double edged sword.

@beaglaoich4418 I guess it depends to what degree Ireland is still shaped by that event. Slavery in America ended in the 1700s, and black people still rightly hold animus about it. To what degree, if any, do you feel that modern Ireland or Irish culture is shaped by the occupation?

@beaglaoich4418 I was referring more to the Irish attitudes to the occupation and the troubles. The famine has clearly not left physical effects that last this long.

@beaglaoich4418 Well THAT is a really interesting overview, and I have little doubt that it represents a pretty decent ground-level view. I had always imagined that there was still a lot of bitterness about the fact that Britain simply partitioned part of Ireland and claimed it, but from what you are saying, the citizens there are largely happy to be part of a larger kingdom.
