Bonnie at 18:52 regarding the homeless: "... most of them have homes to go to if they were sober and did not steal from their family to support their habits." Kudos to Bonnie for having the courage to tell the truth! I have always known this. Good people always have somewhere to go. There is always a friend or family member that will give them a free place to stay while they work to get back their feet. When my granddaughter fell on hard times, she and my great-grandson were invited into our home. There is no way we would have allowed them to live on the street. Then again, my granddaughter is not a thieving drug addict. She worked, saved money, and as expected, is now in a place of her own.

@MaddHeather No friends? No coworkers wanting to split living costs by sharing a cheap rental either I suppose? As you can tell, I'm not the sweetest guy in the world. But I guarantee you that I could pick up the phone tomorrow and find at least several of my former coworkers that would take me in for awhile while I get back up on my feet. That might mean sleeping on the floor in the laundry room or in the garage, but they'd do it for me. And almost anyone in my family would literally INSIST that I stay with them before they would ever allow me to become homeless.

@calisingh7978 Cite the peer reviewed study that proves that!

@gordon3186 With a rare exceptions, the answer is Yes. Since you seem to struggle with reality, let me spell out a few examples of what makes a person "bad": 1) thieving 2) refuses to work 3) commits acts of violence 4) refuses to comply with any rules 5) refuses to participate in rehabilitation 6) urinates/defecates on public streets 7) expects government to give them everything with no terms and conditions Notice that I did not include drug addicts. Although there is certainly a broad social cost for substance abuse, drug addicts who do not steal or otherwise abuse others are primarily hurting only themselves. Also note that I did not include the mentally ill. However, substance abuse is the primary cause of unmanageable SMI. I acknowledge that the public healthcare system does not adequately address the needs of many with SMI. These are usually individuals who refuse to cooperate with a treatment plan or are unable to. The solution is to force them into treatment if necessary. Do a proper assessment of the homeless population and you'll find that 95% check every one of those boxes. I admit that "good" people do sometimes wind up homeless. However, this is almost always for a very short period of time until they find public and private resources that help them pull themselves back up on their own two feet.

@randbarrett8706 I'm saying that people who are "unhoused" are homeless because they chose it! And people like you enable their addictions, crimes, and homelessness.

@calisingh7978 So... no job, no family, no friends, no shelters, do-gooder that would take them in for a while, no government programs that help them get back up on their feet?!?!? BS! That's literally impossible for at least 98% of the homeless on the street!

@RoySATX #1 Your first statement about living paycheck to paycheck says it all. EVERYONE suddenly loses a job sometime in their lifetime. It's happened to me twice! #2 Even if they have no savings, responsible people always have some access to credit that will get them over a bump. #3 You never had a single friend in this whole wide world? And you worked at the same job for 10 years, and not a single coworker would take you in for a while? Unbelievable! I'm an introvert and obviously kind of an a-hole. But even a dick like me has friends, acquaintances, and coworkers that would take me in. #4 There are homeless shelters with vacancies in locations all across the country that have jobs and affordable rents. I once had a coworker that suddenly lost his $80K job with GM in Detroit in 2008. He lost everything and had to leave in order to find work. My employer hired him and allowed him to stay in the training center until he could earn enough to find a place. He rented a room in a coworker's house after receiving his first check. Perfect strangers did this for the man! That's why I don't buy this crap that most of the homeless are just innocent victims of circumstances beyond their control. I'm not saying that there is no one on the street due to some extraordinary bad luck, but that's extremely rare! That might account for 1% of the homelessness we see, and they aren't usually homeless for long until they find help. 99% of the homeless are people who have burnt bridges throughout their entire lives. That includes those whose primary problem is mental illness. The vast majority of America's homeless population are homeless by choice! They simply refuse to actively participate in any rehabilitation program. They demand free housing and free money without terms and conditions. FACTS!

@sharonrusso1191 So why wouldn't your family take you in?

@you6382tube Can't prove a negative! I also can't cite a peer reviewed study that extraterrestrial leprechauns are NOT flying out of your butt (although I suspect there could be). There is just no evidence that most homeless have no family. They do have family. But those families won't take them in because they are thieving violent drug addicts.
