  1. In hockey leg-foul is given even when it is created deliberately despite being ball-to-leg instead of leg-to-ball. This is cruel on the defending side. In football a hand-ball foul is given only when the player deliberately obstructs the ball with his hand, which is called hand-to-ball, but no foul is given if it’s ball-to-hand. This football rule seems fair as compared to the ball-to-leg foul in hockey. Argentinians equalised through penalty corner which they got by creating ball-to-leg foul on the Indian defender. Very unfair …

  3. Thanks Shekhar for this lucid narration on the history of Indian hockey. I got nostalgic when u took the names of Balbir singh, Surjit Singh, Harcharan Singh, Aslam Sher Khan….I was listening to the commentary on the 1975 WC as a child with my father who was a die hard hockey fan.

When the Indian cricket team had the dominance of the privileged castes, particularly bammans, Indian team was a favourite whipping boy for cricket giants …..it was only when this casteist-domination got reduced and the likes of Kapil & Dhoni came in the scenario changed ……I still remember, with disgust, how a player of the caliber of Sunil Gavaskar used his influence as a captain to get Suru Nayak, his fellow jaatwala and a mediocre, into the Indian team for England tour of 1982 at the cost of Mohinder Amarnath who had been scoring in tons in Ranji trophy.
