There r reports about the US diplomats engaging into parlours with opposition leaders like Morarji Desai and others during indira gandhis rule …..it’s anybody’s guess how indira was defeated by janata party and which country was behind that victory designed and executed to perfection to teach indira a lesson for aligning with USSR and for bifurcation of Pakistan ……So far as Pakistan is concerned the ruling as well as the opposition parties of Pakistan do not have any variant view in so far as their relations with China is concerned……

@JEEVANMARATHE : emergency was good for the subalterns and u shld probe d reasons behind indira getting compelled to invoke 356. The excesses of emergency cannot be denied thanks to d hot-headed sanjay otherwise during emergency the govts delivery system were working efficiently….don’t forget it was the joker called Raj Narayan who hd already been done n dusted in politics was brought again in the forefront of the agitation suddenly out of the blue & also don’t forget that Seymour Hersh had exposed Morarji as CIA mole and hd even dared Morarji to show guts to sue him for defamation which Morarji did not eventually……Indiras bifurcation of Pakistan by defying the might of the US wasn’t taken kindly by Nixon and hence the movement against indira was sponsored by US …it seems u weren’t even born than …

@JEEVANMARATHE : Nobody shld ever support emergency because it causes more distress owing to the excesses of govt machinery. But if one analyses d causes behind indiras emergency than it will be seen that there were hardly any corruption charges against the ruling party, the economic hardship that followed the war of 1971 was inevitable but instead of assisting the govt in tiding over the situation the opposition goaded by the US created conditions - JP’s call to insurrection and open provocation to armed forces to revolt was unprecedented- which made invoking of art 356 necessary. Many indira critics point out at the massive surgical operation she did on the constitution but they fail to point out even one amendment which was not for the welfare of the masses. The situation than was akin to that which prevailed in the US during Great Depression of the 1930s and it wld be interesting to note that even the govt of the avowedly capitalist country like US had passed several welfare legislations and even their Courts supported those legislations even if they impinged upon certain individual rights guaranteed by their constitution. Nationalisation of banks, insurance companies opened the door for common mans participation which before that was the sole preserve of the monies and well oiled caste-class….today if the Indian pvt sector is able to perform against the multinationals than it’s because of the strong infrastructural support provided by those welfare legislations passed during and post emergency….
