Comments by "Samson Soturian" (@samsonsoturian6013) on "MS-13: Central America's Deadliest Drugs Gang | The War on Drugs" video.
There doesn't seem any original journalism, just a highly editorialized wiki article.

Originally it meant a large syndicate that attenpts to maintain a monopoly on something (which DTOs commonly do). These days the term means "a gang of gangs."

You know they signed a ceasefire with gangs, right?

@halfforeignamericana5451 Not exactly. There once La Federacion which had a near monopoly on the Mexican drug trade. Their leadership was wiped out, and their component parts started building their own regional drug empires (among them Sinaloa, El Chapo's crew). These days the biggest empires no longer have any connection to La Federacion.

@WhitePony556 are you trolling me? Because not even Salvadorans have this sort of cringy sycophancy towards anyone.
3
These days it is used to mean satan, though.

Most of Sinaloa is defunct with components all dead, in prison, going independent, or defecting to rival gangs. Jalisco is the new outlaw kingdom.
2
Homicides also vary wildly year to year depending which gangs are fighting who, so the assertion Salvador is the murder capital is outdated since Bukele signed ceasefires with many gangs.

@WhitePony556 and you know this how, pendejo? Exactly, and there's more people involved in these gang wars than just Bukele as police commonly don mask on patrol because more often than not cops are killed at their house than when arresting fools.

Lose the stupid partisan junk

Ops Blac shut up

Or perhaps VICE misunderstands the absolute chaos within MS-13. It's not like there's any leader of the group, and I'm not sure they wven qualify as a DTO.

It changes every year, but the press doesn't keep track.

@TreShadDMW It's not just the leaders, a lot of the middle management has been wiped out. For instance, there use to be 7 "offices" that used burner phones and a whole network of connections to pass messages from one guy to another (no one person knew all the phone numbers). Now that's gone, and leadership have more difficulty and risk simply talking to each other.

@jrami223 it is widely believed in Salvador that a truce was reached with gang leaders in prison, but also rumors circulate that Bukele is accused of violating the terms. This is all hearsay and no one can say much for certain.
1
@jrami223 there's more than one gang in El Salvador, and even MS-13 is an umbrella group for many gangs and has no actual leader
1
1:45 False. MS-13 was first recorded in Los Angeles when some gangsters got deported. No one knows why in the following years hundreds of existing gangs adopted the name MS-13.
