I don't use GNOME 3 because I have dual monitors and it isn't very slick in that regard, I liked GNOME well enough back when I had a single screen (older more square style so I suppose similarities to a tablet). Xfce and KDE are very well adapted to multiple monitors and in multiple configurations with multiple virtual desktops, I usually like to run one monitor landscape for general use, and one in portrait orientation for text and terminal or tiling several reduced windows. But I do rotate fairly and alter alignment(center, top, or bottom; side by side or stacked) often so ease of changing the setup is important, Xfce allows me to have several custom one click presets and moving windows around both monitors and virt-desktops is very natural.

On the otherhand if you also anything non-apple then apple products won't work at all. Even where they use the same underlying standard protocol they are programmed to simply refuse to cooperate.
