Smaller part of Georgians and then whole Armenians under the Ottomans were considered "dhimmi".. meaning their status were under the Muslim Ottomans and things like possession of firearms were forbidden for them. So they they had to fight the occupiers in any way even with sword and shields, beside this served as a way to preserve their tradition.
