  1. How much lung capacity can you live without? My dad lived with 1/5th of his lung capacity due to polio and paralysis. It severely limited his movement and energy — and though I don't know for sure, I suspect his heart worked overhard to keep his body alive. He had a barrel chest, scoliosis, weak legs and a heavy, uneven gait. But he did a tremendous job being a dad and a househusband.
